Hello Brown Eyes,

This photo is somewhere between a snapshot and a comercial catalog photo. I really don't buy it as catalog yet, though. The clothes say nothing, there's obviously no styling involved, and you must work on your expressions. A simple smile is nice for a snap, but that's about it.

I looked through your port, and even though I didn't really like anything in it, I think that if you work with better photographers that know how to direct a model, you should do much better. Give me a holler if you are ever in L.A.

If this was a painting by Caravaggio, I would feel differently because of the context, but I looked at your port, and as I see it, you are trying to create photos that look like paintings.

Painting and photography are two very different and distinct art forms, each with it's own technique and form of communication. These days when contemporary painting is rather conceptual than figurative, your work stands out as old fashioned. I reminds me of this early 20th Century photographer, whose name I can't recall at the moment, but he shot young boys in Taormina, Sicily, in a very similar manner to yours.

I would say, you should look at more modern stuff. You are creative, but you are mimicking  old forms. Try to focus that energy into creating something that has never been seen before. It's much more satisfying as well.

I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed.

Thanks! I totally understand where your coming from. Im not professional by any means. Im all self taught. Id love to be able to have such high quality work as you someday. Your port is amazing.

Bonsoir Amandine,

I like your work. You are a very interesting model. I wish I knew you when I was in Paris last year. Hopefully next time.

Regarding this series of photos: I like the fact that you are not trying hard to look good for the sake of the photos, and I respect that. However, I wish that the photo depended more on you than on the styling. I find people more interesting than styling. I don't feel particularly engaged, though I can appreciate the technical know how behind this, I feel that the soul is missing, and I apologize for being vague in this  respect, but this is they best way I can put it in words. Maybe it's because Photoshop never impressed me, and these images rely quite a bit on it.

Cheers mate smile

That's the spirit! Last weekend I went into a very deep depression because of my work and the fact that I feel that my creativity has run out. In a stupid self-destructive move, I announced my retirement from photography in May.

It took a good editorial shoot yesterday, which I lit unlike I have ever lit before, with a very good model and a full team to bring me back. Unfortunately, I'm unable to post it, because it's up for publishing.
That put things back into perspective.

Normally, no one is more displeased with my work than myself.

Merci for your time!

I can understand the general idea about the use of photoshop.

I'm glad you could appreciated some of my work anyway, we can't always win.

Not crazy about the cropping, which looks accidental, but well executed nonetheless. It mustn't have been easy.

I am impressed.

I'm sorry, but this has the look of a prom picture. The styling is amateurish, as well as the model. That blur you applied is a little annoying, and cheapens the photo.

I'm sorry to come down so hard on you, but I'm sure you can do better.

Again, my apologies, but not impressed.

something new?

Love you... The photo, not so much, so I'll separate the two, and just consider you.

Love the hair (I hope it's yours), the pose and expression. You make eye contact with the viewer. Your expression challenges the viewer to look at you.

This is why I always keep asking you when you'll be coming to L.A. smile

The photo I think is overly photoshopped, and I don't like the color chosen. Too monochromatic, without being black and white.

I'm also not much of a fan of the "Nudes in Nature" genre. To me it has always looked silly. However, here nature is transformed to the point of looking artificial, it might as well be shot in a studio. since "nature" is absent from this image. This, I think, is in my opinion what makes this photo interesting.

I am impressed by your work, and I look forward to working with you relatively soon.

I sent you a tag page recently but I am not sure how often you check them.
I should be down there, mid June for 5 days.
There actually is no post editing done, my photographer shot them with an infrared filter in camera. I think it adds a unique difference to my portfolio, though Im still narrowing down which shots to keep.
Thanks for considering my photo with pros and cons. I respect your work and opinions!

Thanks for looking. No "blur" was applied, that's f1.4 but I understand shallow dof isn't for everyone. The model is an amateur so at least we can agree on that.

Have at it Jorge.  I'm new to this side of photography and I've always felt strong words breed strong commitments to change.  We don't grow if nobody is honest about what you can improve.
