I'm hunting for a quick and easy studio to go. I want to do both white and black backdrops. I realize there are tons of options out there, but my specific requirement is for something I can easily pack away, put in trunk of car and go to assignment, which might be full length images for fashion or more tightly cropped images for business portraits...cheers!

You can get really nice lighting with just a couple of flashes on stands, as long you know how to use and diffuse them. But, flashing them right at the subject, with the power way up and no diffusion or bouncing it, you'll generally end up with the subject looking 20 years older and 30 pounds heavier than they actually are. You probably already know that - but, shockingly, many people don't.

As a model, I worked with any number of people who had super fancy, expensive multifaceted lighting set-ups, who produced mediocre (at best) images, as well as people who had nothing but a camera and a bounce card and created exceptional work

And how big is your budget?

Joey L has a good article that covers low, mid, and high end kits.

The cheap lighting kit I found on Ebay was about $100, came with everything including a white and black background.

Although it is cheap, it all works well.  Fits in the nice bag that came with it.
