WOW... honestly though they made A LOT MORE than $7.25 an hour... and they're instructed to attend community functions WITHOUT PAY?... that's SERIOUS BULLSHIT if you ask me.   Could be some legal action in the works here kids!... GO POMPOM GIRLS!... borat

Many times they are required to show up at dozens of non-game events and in luxury suites for appearances that generate “substantial” revenues that are not shared... tongue   A-hole Roger Goodell should pay them out of his 50 million a year salary!... wink

That’s more than I’ve earned as a photographer.

The cheerleaders at my college weren’t paid anything, neither were the football players.

some get less than minimum wage, when you figure out all the hours vs. pay. the cheerleaders are sold as a "privilege" and "fame". most are only paid by the game, around $100-$150 each. no pay for practice, no pay for special appearances, no pay for photo sessions or much of anything else. for the big teams, they have to go through a lot to "get on the team".

the show girls in las vegas get more money per night - typically $!50 per show, 2 shows per day. they also don't get paid for rehearsals, fittings, though sometimes they do get paid for some special events, but usually not for casino or show (crazy horse, lido, etc.) promotions and events. those are the line/chorus dancers, the lead dancers or featured dancers get more, of course.

it's a huge scam.

The Las Vegas showgirl is now an extinct species.  They went the way of free parking, $3 Steak or Prime Rib dinners and comped drinks to all players.  Now everything is Cirque shows.

You better not give all those naive young models you have been exploiting and taking advantage of all these years any ideas...they will get together and call Gloria Allred. I hear she's a real bitch.

Scratch a rich person & you'll likely find tons of exploited minimum-wage (or less) employees.  Gotta keep those poor people poor!

There are many different classes of cheerleaders, many aren't paid minimum wage simply because they don't meet caliber.

There are great cheerleaders and then there are bad ones, what's unique about the entertainment industry is that it's vastly unregulated compared to most other industries. So it's up to agencies and employers to determine pay.

There are many rich people who worked hard or smarter to earn thier money, not messisarily exploiting anyone.

Each of those cheerleaders probably probably have Instagram and Patreon accounts and expect photographers to do free shoots for them.

That's why I used the qualifier "likely".

There are also many rich people who are on the front lines of resisting changes to the minimum wage.  Papa John comes to mind immediately, and so does Mitch McConnell.  Let's be honest:  we'd question the sanity of any minimum wage person who thinks raising the minimum wage is a bad thing.

They didn't raise it at all during Obama's 8 years, even when Dems controlled the house and senate. Why do you suppose that was?

(Equal opportunity cynic & skeptic here).

I think that the issue isn't Democrats vs. Republicans.  This is an issue about "rich" vs. "poor".  The members of Congress represent the rich people who bought them and not the poor people who elected them.

This is correct.

It's also worth noting (assuming you're the type that wants to) that there were other factors at okay - most of them related to rich guys supporting themselves.

1) for much of Obama's tenure, the country was in a recession, and unemployment was high. It's REALLY hard to convince business owners to pay more when they have more applications than they have jobs.

2) the big one - minimum wage increases began at the state level, and in most cases are still state issues. The big wage increases started in mostly blue states, before NY took it up. Now NY us a blue state nationally, but it's very much a red state at the state legislature level. NYC is super blue.

So when NYC announced they were raising minimum wages (many large cities have their own laws, separate from the state) , the rest of the state had to accommodate to keep people where they are. The minimum wage drips lower and lower the further you get from the city, as people up North can get away with paying less.

Once several states started looking into this, the federal government HAD to start looking into it as well. How pissed would you be if a guy working in the next state over made five bucks more an hour for the same job? Wouldn't that be a voting issue for you?

So yeah. A lot more to it than who is in office at the time. As you may recall, gay marriage happened the same way - first a bunch of states, then nationally.

NFL cheerleaders are not really a minimum wage issue.  They are entertainers and are not really covered by much of anything.  Most of the cheerleader wannabees are so desperate to be actual cheerleaders that if the team were to sell spots as cheerleaders, there would be no trouble finding candidates who qualify to do it and would also be willing to pay.

I personally think the idea of scantily clad adult women pretending to be cheerleaders at a professional football game is embarrassing for everyone involved.

Raising minimum wage also resulted in hiring robots

You want robot cheerleaders?
