David Douglas Duncan, 102, Who Photographed the Reality of War, Dies

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/07/obit … v=top-news

Mr. Duncan, who had lived since 1962 in Castelleras, France, died on Thursday in the South of France, his friend Joel Stratte-McClure said. He was 102.

He was among the most influential photographers of the 20th century, a Life magazine peer of Alfred Eisenstaedt, Margaret Bourke-White and Carl Mydans. In addition to his war work, Mr. Duncan spent years with Pablo Picasso, creating a pictorial record of the artist’s life, and roamed the world making photographic essays on the Kremlin, the city of Paris and the panorama of peoples in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Such a wealth of powerful images, across a variety of genres  .  .  .  his eye helped all who viewed his work be there with him  .  .  .  his images of Pablo Picasso give a wonderful, more personal view of a giant in the art world, they were long time collaborators and I assume friends  .  .  .  at 102, he experienced many generations of change, it seems the only constant was ongoing warfare, sadly, he could be in the field today documenting almost the same scenes he did in the 40's and 50's  .  .  .

So sad to hear, he was an early favorite of mine, have several books of his .
He was one of the first Journalists to adopt Nikon rangefinder cameras during the Korean War and was the photographic version of Forrest Gump during the War in the Pacific. A Navy officer with simple orders to cover the war with the travel priority of General Officer. During the war he became friends with a Navy Supply Officer Richard Nikon and had extensive coverage of the 1968 election and was the only journalist in the family quarters election night ( Self Portrait USA by DDD, Life Books).
A pioneer of modern Journalism and one of the most influential Nikon Photographers.
