Strobists w/SB-800 thread
. Hey y'all, I would like to have a thread geared towards the strobist who uses sb-800 flashes or the equivalent for there strobe work. I would like to see pics of what your set-ups are and how you use them as well as photos to back them up. I have read alot of what is on the strobist site and already own one sb-800. I have yet to tap into its amazing uses. But I plan to. So if you would, please post any pics of your set-ups, describe them and explain why you think it works or dont work. What can be improved and what lessons you have learned. Thanks, -Puma- . Jan 06 08 07:01 pm Link LaPuma wrote: It's pretty much the greatest flash ever made. It only needs some more power. Jan 06 08 07:04 pm Link the images of murar in my port were done with a sb800 in a softbox. I love my an but it needs more power and consistency. I prefer studio strokes whenever possible. I like what the strobist is all about for a hobbyist but you can't always do the job on the cheap with tape, and glue. Jan 06 08 07:59 pm Link Nikon SB24 @1/8 power ⢠Pocket Wizard & Zip Lock (forgot my grip gear!) ⢠Sony DSC-R1 ⢠iso400 ⢠f6.3- 1/30" ps. i still haven't figured out how to use my D200 / SB800 WIRELESS ps.ps. Why doesn't Canon have a PC connection on their speedlights?!? Jan 06 08 08:05 pm Link . Where was it placed? behind her to the left?(her right) -Puma- . Jan 06 08 08:19 pm Link http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/ittlslave.htm Sorry if I did this wrong my first post. I read this yesterday and can now use my SB600 on D80 wireless. Jan 06 08 11:21 pm Link I use SB-600's, not all that much different from SB-800's. Fun little things. Single SB-600 shot through a 24" diffuser from frame top right. Fired via PWs. 2 SB-600's bare from frame top left. Fired and metered via CLS. A little bit of everything. Porty w/ 28" softbox from frame top right, Litepac w/ 60" & 48" umbrellas from frame left & right, SB-600 bare from frame rear left (the big sparkly thing). Fired via PWs. Jan 06 08 11:41 pm Link Photos 1,3,5,6,8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16 and 17 on my port are SB-800 CLS based. Different setups, different number of units and modes. Jan 06 08 11:54 pm Link Using SB-800's for Strobist work is like taking a gun to a knife fight. Vivitar 285 and Sunpak 383 have almost the same GN for 1/4 the price, which allows for a decent flash meter. Nikon Wireless is a Infrared system, so in the end it needs Line of sight(mostly) Radio can at least get through some walls and some of the more usually placements. Jan 07 08 12:55 am Link Maybe a little off topic but, where did the term "strobist" come from? Jan 07 08 12:57 am Link Check out www.daveblackphotography.com Click on "workshops at the ranch" Dave Black is a Nikon guy, he tests out their equipment before it is released(I think either the D300 or D3). He uses anywhere from one SB800 to multiple ones in his tutorials. ps also check out "on the road" Jan 07 08 12:58 am Link Jan 07 08 01:04 am Link i love my sb 800 wireless !!!! By the way you know there is a house music song that has your first name repeating in it, back in the day (1988) house music fans from Chicago would chant that name while it was played. Jan 07 08 01:18 am Link All but one of the images in my portfolio uses a combination of up to six of these types of flash units. Mine have digital control over an eight stop range and I use them paired or quadrupled up at times to get an extra stop or two by gaffer taping them together (1 pair doubles output for 1 stop more light, 2 pairs quadruples light output for 2 stops more). Typically, I have a pair for a key light with silver umbrella, a pair for a background light gaffertaped to a speedotron 7inch reflector with 30 degree grid, a single unit gaffer taped to another 7 inch reflector with either a 10 or 30 degree grid for hairlight/highlighting and another single unit for any additional effects that I may need. The flash units taped to reflectors are set to 24mm focal length so that the reflector can shape the light more than the lens of the flash unit. If you are creative, you can tape these types of flash units to just about any modifier that you could want. Coupled with good modifiers, the sky is the limit! The following shot is one of my favorites as lighting goes. The spot on the ground is from a pair of flash units with a 7 inch reflector and 30 degree grid attached to a makeshift boom stand. The light on the model was with a shoot through umbrella and a single flash unit. Jan 07 08 01:35 am Link FARLEY MAGADIA wrote: This is SO true!! I hate using hotshoe adaptors... Jan 07 08 08:57 am Link Hey Mike, experimenting with Commander mode myself and had Heidi model for me. Shoot was quick, about 45 minutes and got what I wanted. - - - - SB-800 behind a panel to soften the light and reflector for fill. Key thing is being able to control the flash output from camera location. I'm starting to shoot more photos of my setups , good for reference and helping out in explanations. Besides we do have to have records of what gear we have for insurance purposes. Hope that helped. Jan 07 08 09:46 am Link I use a total of six, and I am getting ready to purchase a seventh. They're great! I use them for all my remote shooting, in the woods, mounted on monopods in a lake or up on a boom through the tree tops. No Compliants, the wireless features have and outstanding range, and with the use of the SU-800 the range increases, I believe it is up to 63 feet on both sides of the SU-800. And they or quite powerful and fast. That's my two cents! Enjoy! Jake Jan 07 08 09:54 am Link David Hobby (The Strobist) is a member here. Perhaps you can lure him into this thread. Jan 07 08 10:06 am Link All but 3 of the images in my MM Portfolio are shot with a single SB-800 (or sb-26) through a 42" umbrella. https://modelmayhem.com/pics.php?id=100050 Jan 07 08 10:06 am Link Joe Alcantar wrote: Well done.....Thanks for sharing Jan 07 08 10:08 am Link Taken in the last week: D2X, 3 SB 800s, Su-800 commander. lumiquest snoots. Does anybody know if the current models of off-camera TTL cords work with old-fashioned (pre-digital) TTL flashes or did Nikon change the wiring in ways that make them incompatible? Now I just have to decide whether it's worth getting one for my old SB-15 or if should upgrade to a SB-24/6/8 (or even save my pennies for a 600 or 800 in anticipation of someday going digital) Jan 07 08 11:22 am Link All of my headshots are done with one SB-600 off camera. That's all I use, and I love the results. Jan 07 08 11:23 am Link I have 4 SB-600's, all my shots in my port are shot using a combination of these when on location. I have a huge assortment of modifiers that I can chose from depending on the shot. I like the portablilty of the setup. I trigger all my strobes with Pocket Wizards (held in place of course using the hildozine caddy). I have more images posted in my Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/8390236@N03/ most of the images have a description of the setup that was used. Jan 07 08 12:40 pm Link Every photo in my port has been lit with a mix of SB-800s, SB-600s and SB-R200s. I love these lights!! I can go anywhere and set up quickly. Very handy when you're shooting "on the run" so to speak.... ;-) Jan 07 08 02:17 pm Link FusionMediaCo wrote: Consistency?!?!?!?
