Orlando Meet and Greet

Thursday March, 19th 2009, 7-9PM

This event is a causal meeting of photographers and models in the Orlando area to get together and discuss photography in a constructive atmosphere.  The meetings cover critiques of each others work, peer tutorials on photographic tips and tricks and general photography discussions.

https://www.walker1812.com/borders/opec-3rd-thurs-banner.jpg

This event takes place on every 3rd Thursday of each month (generally) from 7-9pm. (people tend to arrive early and leave late though, check this thread to see if anyone will.)

The date for the next event is Thursday, March, 19th.

https://www.walker1812.com/borders/opec-location-banner.jpg

Well for our 10th OPEC we seem to have stopped our wandering caravan and found a new home... the first night there in November seemed to go over well and playing Wii Mario Kart on an 12' wide screen was a great way to end the night, lol.

The new location is in the new Orlando Photography Studio, a studio consisting of a couple of local photographers who share the space. The studio is in the back of the Altamonte Commerce Center in Altamonte Springs (see map below)... Feel free to contact people on the thread who say they are going to see if they want to go in together on some food.

311 Altamonte Commerce Blvd
Suite 1606
Altamonte Springs, FL 32714

Basically at the intersection of Central Prkwy and I-4 where that big useless and solitary high rise is in Altamonte by the mall
https://fc35.deviantart.com/fs39/f/2008/323/3/2/studio_map_by_walker1812.jpg

Same time 7-9pm but of course we usually arrive early and stay later... maybe more Wii or a movie on the big screen.

You won't have a problem finding the studio... we will either have someone outside or do a cheesy balloon thing.. All are welcome to attend.

Pass the word so that everyone knows the location.

All that said...

This, folks is NOT a social event.

The critique setup is classic art school. You get up and present your works one at a time. There will be a moderator, whose job it will be to make sure everyone stays on track and to keep others from talking out of turn. The presenter will show a piece and everyone will have a chance to ask questions about it, and then present their thought-out critique of the individual images (NOT the photographer or model's work in general). Honesty is best here, but we need to keep this constructive. "That sucks," is NOT acceptable. Point out what you like about it, you don't like, etc.

The format for the event will start off with a general critique of about 5 photographs of historical or artistic importance by renowned photographers.  Then will move on to a presentation of approximately 4-5 photographers or models.  The critique will adjust for models due to the fact that there we are commenting on the model and NOT the quality photograph. We are still working on a good format for model critiques.

Critiques need to be constructive and tactful.  A lot of emphasis is placed on the negative usage of the word critique.  In that art world it is a learning tool and saying positive things about a photograph is an equal part of it as pointing out areas of improvement.  If an area needs improvement try to point out possible ways of implementing it as well.

For further detail on the type of critique that will be expected, please follow this link to How to Judge Art: Five Qualities you can Critique whether you’re an Artist or not

https://www.walker1812.com/borders/opec-who-can-banner.jpg

This is an open event and anyone is welcome to attend, though it's nice to announce your intentions on here instead of showing up without warning (which is still acceptable but surprising to us) The people who get to present and be critiqued are usually people who announce their desire to on here, but if you ask to be, please show up or we may not let you play with us anymore.  Also, if you are unwilling to have your own work critiqued but like to show up to throw in your two cents, you may be asked to put up or shut up.

If you STILL have questions regarding this group, please contact Jesse (aka Walker1812)

For those wishing to attend, please post your interest in the thread.

The only people I take for granted as being there are me, Marliese, Jesse and James (IZONU), and the last only b/c we're talking with him about using his space. Lol.

Everyone else I wait for a request to be added to the list.

Thanks for the technical assistance tonight, it was of great help, even with the images being distorted a little bit and the color off, it would have been much much worse without it.

This may be the scariest mental image ever.  I am proud to say that I hated Debbie Gibson in her prime, when all the little girls around me squealed over her.

And here you thought you were the only one who could create horrific fantasy images smile lol.

I can make it worse. *picture me pressing the Debbie Gibson fan club pillow up to the Backstreet Boys one and pretending they are making out*  Debbie is such a tramp.

Here is a frightening one for you, one of the backstreet boys actually had a crush on me when we were 11 or 12, before he was a backstreet boy. Would probably have dated, except he had been dating a friend.  That's actually completely true.  But here's the funny part,  I had no clue he became a backstreet boy until I was 22, because I never liked them and had no clue what their names were.   I almost made out with a backstreet boy,  AAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Morning kids
It was a distinct pleasure to see each and every one of you that wandered out last night
I believe a good time was had by all
Helpful information was exchanged

Jesse, you did a fantastic job leading the entire thing
Marcus, very helpful with the technical part, that was very nice of you

Erica, loved how you kept things in line when they got too long winded

The only down side at all is seeing all those pictures reminded me of just how much I suck artistically

I am looking forward to the next one
Please put me on the list

It's a growing experience for all.

I'm sadly disappointed that Jesse didn't explain the basic terms to me in a very mocking voice. I was looking forward to that. 'Cause I really don't know 'em.
