I have a similar product from Bowens - works good.
Note - mine uses Bowens Studio Flash so its much more power. If you can live with low power ... make your own !

I tried it this weekend.

I wish I had spent the money on glass instead.  I may still find it useful but not nearly as much as I had hoped.  With an SB800, it just doesn't deliver the light I want.

So maybe it's just me.  I'll be interested in finding out what others have to say.

My unqualified advice is to buy a real ring light if that's the light you want.

The RayFlash.  I've seen the ads but for $299 it seems just a bit steep for what it is.  They're the same price on eBay, too.  Wait a few months for the Chinese knock-offs to show up.  It's the same people that make ExpoDisc for white balance.  For the same $299, I've been tempted to buy the Zeus ZRM-1 Ringmaster.  I can probably mod it to work with my pack system.  I'm an electronics engineer during my day job.

I didn't realize the Alien Bees Ring Flash was only $399.  Ahhh.  $299 for a piece of plastic or an actual ring flash for only $100 more.  The piece of plastic really doesn't sound like a great deal to me...but I still think it's cool....but you might as well spend the extra $100...

Or...the Zeus ZRM-1 Ringmaster is $299 but you need their battery pack...

the rayflash is much smaller and lighter than the abr800, which makes it much more convenient for weddings, events, travel, etc.

I'll second that. Alienbees are great products for the money and produce quality images. Once I save up i'm all over the ABR, which won't be long considering it's price.

I have the Alien Bees ringflash.....ABR800.
It's fairly light...easily hand holdable...and best of all....very versitle on how you can use it ...on-camera, off-camera soft boxes/Moon Units....and more importantly...using it outdoors....you will need all the light 'power/wattage' possible.
For the xtra $100 for an AB ring flash....waaaay worth it.
On my portal page....a few AB ringflash images...

I was reading that this baby can also double as a beauty dish with the grid on it. Curious of your experiences????

holy overpriced.

I agree.  TTL on a ring would be kind of nice, but $300 for that is brutal.

This isn't really a "beauty dish" shot, but this was the ABR800 with the grid on it.

$300 bucks for a a hunk of plastic with plastic rods in it.
put that 300 towards a REAL ring flash.

Dont you just love how real basic crap is marked up 1000% just cause its geared towards the Pro market?

Man the light is very nice indeed now I have to think more about getting this with a grid vs a new light with a beauty dish and grid setup.

Dont get me wrong... i like the convenience factor and that it will work easily with any lens.
butt his thing should cost no more than $50 bucks

one other thing i just though of, how heavy is it?  this item clips onto the flash which is connected to the shoe, Id get a little paranoid about something hitting it or laying it down, might put undo stress on the shoe mount

I did a quick review on my blog and posted a couple of sample images (untouched). I agree that it's priced too high, but I had a AB ring flash that I ended selling since I would have had to spend an additional $250 for the battery pack. So the AB ring flash ends up more like and additional $350 over the Ray Flash. BTW, it seems to be great for macro work (photographer david maynard showed me some fantastic macro examples)

Here's the link to my review:

Overall I was pretty pleased with the results and loved the portability of it. Now if they just lowered the price....
