Hey guys,

I'm looking to get into alternative shoots, gothic and such. I've been looking for some models to work with and I noticed that there are lots of people saying their interested in steampunk themed shoots. I'm a bit curious, my understanding of that word is lots of cogs and wheels and brass automatons. How can that be incorporated into portraits? Any egs? big_smile

Sorry for the dumb question, just curious

Edwardian lady gets her finery ripped to pieces in HG Wells time machine and she ends up finding herself perfectly at home on the Kings Rd in 1977 trying to pawn pieces of said time machine to antique shops there in order to eat; as the sinister fog that has followed her through threatens to envelop the whole of old London towne...
But fear not; for Adam Adamant is hot on her trail...leave that man alone...

If you google it you can find lots of images. There are some great steampunk designers here on MM as well. If you realized it was about gears and such, isn't that your answer as to how you can incorporate it into the shoot? Try lighting that's very golden, use editing to create a "rust effect", shoot in an abandoned building or factory, have the model wearing an amazing steampunk outfit. The point is- use your imagination.

Thank you for pointing out that the basis of the look is Edwardian (or late Victorian).  I see too many people trying to do "steampunk" without even a rudimentary understanding of the principal.

Suppose our modern conveniences were forged with 100+-year-old technology.  Dress accordingly.

A humble request as you begin your steampunk adventure: take a pass on the fighter pilot goggles cliché. wink

Seriously, I do encourage you to look far beyond MM for inspiration. Movies, classic steampunk and cyberpunk sci-fi books, actual turn-of-century photography, etc.

There's plenty of steam-punk anime - look at Last Exile, Laputa, even Steam Boy.

Also, look up Phil Foglio and Girl Genius.

Sorry to say, lots of goggles!

I completely agree about the goggles. I am a SP participant and vowed long ago to never, ever wear a pair of goggles.
