The combination of the naked, forlorn figure in that rugged scenery is reminiscent of Dore's illustrations to Dante's "Inferno", and creates a powerful and mysterious sense of isolation, vulnerability, and despair. The trailing, bedraggled hair and hidden face enhances this mood with a somewhat ghostly "Ring"-like air.
