Known as 'The Makeup Man', Lazarus Jean-Baptiste is the hot star of the makeup world. Sought after for his range of styles with all ethnicities and his charming interpersonal skills, Lazarus has worked with Master photographers, Patrick Demarchelier, Peter Lindbergh, Brigitte Lacombe, Kutlu, Timothy White, Joseph Montezinos and Marc Baptiste.
“The fact that I have been a makeup artist for over 17 years astonishes me. This is the last thing I would have ever thought to do for a living, but life can be full of beautiful surprises.”
Just as impressive as his formidable skill is the story of how he came to discover his talent.
“The last job I held before getting into the beauty business was as a State certified department store security guard, 'Top flight security' [lol]. It was then that I was first exposed to the world of beauty and dated the young woman that would change my life. She was a makeup artist, and while we dated I became curious with what she did. With love and patience she nurtured my curiosity into a passion and taught me the fundamentals of makeup.”
Confident in his skill set, Lazarus set out to forge a niche for himself among NYC's makeup professionals. It wasn't long before his hand caught the eye of makeup manufacturer Philippe Privé. Lazarus went on to collaborate with Privé as the co-designer of the 'Philippe Privé' cosmetic line. The avant-garde makeup collection launched at Saks Fifth Avenue NYC in September '99 and opened at Takashimaya the following year. In 2005 Lazarus was personally selected by Fashion Icon Iman to be a contributor to her top selling book ‘The Beauty of Color. The Ultimate Beauty Guide For Skin of Color.’
Currently 'The Makeup Man' is The Master Artisan for ‘Le Métier de Beauté’ a posh cosmetic line sold exclusively at Neiman Marcus Stores. Lazarus is also a contributor to 'O' Magazine, and can be found designing the faces of models, singers, actresses, and private clients. When asked to elaborate on the source of his inspiration, he replies.
“My muse is the woman sitting across from me. By virtue of being a woman my client inspires me…whether she's demure, elegant, stunning, sensual, playful or audacious, it is her uniquely feminine qualities I unveil.”
