I prefer clear direction, and a well-defined shoot concept BEFORE the shoot.
Also, I work really well by visual example - show me an image or two that is similar to what you're going for, and tell me what about it you want/don't want. Give me words or phrases to work off of, that exemplify a feeling or mood.
