I really don't shoot much digital anymore, that being said I need ventilation for making plates. Until it warms up outside I will not be able to shoot. Can't wait till spring has sprung.
I've been on this site for a couple of years now. I no longer have anything witty or charming to say. Here are some things I've taken away from this experience.
1) We all want paid work. If we were at the level to only expect paid work, we wouldn't be on this site. This site is built for testing. Companies and agencies are who you hit up for money, not people exactly like you scraping by. If this sounds too raucous I do apologize, however it is very much a fact in how I feel.
2) Don't toss people away when they want to work with you and are inexperienced. Who knows, in two years they could be unobtainable and amazing and you're the person that said "meh, not worth my time". (Yes, I sure as shit have done and regretted that)
3) Critiques, holy god critiques. If you really want to get better, you have to accept someone telling you the worst decision you made on that shoot and not take it personally. That is how you don't do it again. That's learning. If you want to feel good about what you did ask for something else.
4) Lastly, just be nice. It's cool to poke a bit, however there are more threads of me being a complete asshole to someone that didn't deserve it because I thought I was more awesome than I'd like to admit, and it's all searchable. When you are just learning, you revert to the teenage experience of being "hot shit". Seasoned people just sit back and laugh and watch you knock over everything and eventually puke on yourself. (again i have done this) Please, just be cool and ask a LOT of questions.
I want to make beautiful things. I want you to want to make beautiful things.
I was lucky enough to be accepted into Christopher James Advanced Alternative Processes workshop thru Santa Fe Photographic Workshops. Here are the tintypes from that workshop my wife and I created. 2012
