TERRELL GATES
I am an artist /photographer who writes. I have become a photographer by default because I work from the photos I take. I have been painting, drawing, and photographing figures, and portraits for centuries, and have found that nude figures of males or females are not subjects most people are ready to hang on their walls. I find that male nudes in particular have a very narrow audience.
Throughout history nude figures have been popular subjects with artists and sculptors but often controversial. The male figure in particular suffers most as a subject, especially in America due most likely to our Puritan beginnings and an aversion to sexuality. I don't consider them erotic and I wish nude figures were accepted as just another subject, but I don't expect things to change. At least I'm in good company, (Great artists throughout history) with nudes as my favorite subject.
These days the only models I have been able to find have been males. The females are a little reticent to pose nude in my area of the country (Espanola, NM). As a consequence, most of the drawings and photos I have posted are male and most are of my current model Wynston, who is extraordinary.
I guess I'll just keep on keepn on. I love painting, drawing or photographing the nude as a subject.
I have a Bachelors degree from The University of Southern California, USC and a Masters from Yale.
I painted and designed scenery for all the major movie, and TV studios, as well as the The San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle Opera Companies, and the Los Angeles, and Pasadena, Civic Light Opera.
I am represented in the collections of a few celebrities; Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Lila Kedrova, Joseph Cotton, Joyce Howard, and some renown collectors; Frederick Warhanek, Edward Myers, and Wayne Curtice.
