PHILANTHROPIST THROUGH PHOTOS
Photographers usually have a kind of used car salesman sleaziness to them. They charge you top dollar and may push you outside your comfort zone. Many models can report having a “stranger danger” moment like Coco Hernandez in “Fame”. However, the interview I had with photographer Jamie Forhan , left me feeling enlightened, humbled, and determined to make a difference. My experience may have differed because Jamie Forhan is 30% photographer and 70% activist.
Not to be understated, that uneven ratio has created a balance and made a big statement in the local fashion scene. He combines his love for photography and duties as a world citizen to benefit local models, foundations, business owners, and designers. Through the meetup.com group he established called ‘Fashion in the DMV’, he can do just that. Jamie shares the views of DC urbanites and fashionistas, that the DMV should be a more significant influence for the international fashion industry. For someone who has the inside track to work with so many talented designers from Kustom Looks to Booshie Designs, I can’t help but agree with his frustration.
Moreover, he’s not just complaining about the lack of diversity in the fashion industry and the ignorance of the public to social issues, he’s doing something about it by merging them together. Jamie uses his work to help the Munchkin Fund he founded in honor of the late love of his life. The Munchkin Fund is currently helping the Philippine Institute for the Deaf. His determination pushes everyone to help a charity or cause including the models and designers he uses in photo shoots.
What else can we look forward to from this humanitarian? Jamie’s work will be featured in the next issue of The Paige , a showcase magazine for new and learning photographers, models, make up artists, and designers.. Jamie Forhan recognizes it’s the responsibility of everyone to help their community in any way that they can. His way is behind a camera, what is yours?
