I get asked one question, quite often, how do I as a model earn money to be photographed.  So, I think here are a few simple points that describe the industry in a simple enough way.

1. Check for what the casting calls are by the clothing or product industries.  Check for fine arts photographers that require models as well.

2. In general, you pay a photographer to shoot portfolio shots so that you can apply to the casting calls.  Plus, you have a shoot list, rather then just taking pictures.

3. The companies that higher you to model the cloathing, display the products or for fine arts pose and they pay you.

So, if you are serious it requires research.

For me, if a model cannot afford a portfolio shoot then I trade time for stock to shoot their portfolio images.  Three catagories:  business, medical and fitness.  If you are aiming at being the next big super model, then we do not include face pics in the stock work.

Paid stock or micro stock work is also possible, for new models it requires a pre-shoot where we do a certain number of images to see how marketable those images are and to train you in what is wanted by the industry.  Simply, a great smile, brilliant eyes and in shape.  From that we can determine a pay rate per hour.  If the rate is less the $20.00 an hour it is not worth doing for anyone.  If you are already out there have plenty of experience then a rate between $50.00 - $100.00 an hour is possible and images would be used in rights managed stock world.

How the micro stock rates are based.  $20.00 an hour is based on selling 860 images in a month, from a set of 50 saleable images.  The full portfolio would consist of 200 saleable images.  If you sell at a rate of 4300+ images a month from 50 images then you earn $100.00 per hour.

For those looking for $1000.00+ dollars per hour, that would be 43000 images a month from 50 images.

To stay exclusive to rights managed (stock), it would mean all or nothing, either it makes the mony to pay or not.

To explain photographers again:
Photographers earn money by taking pictures of product or models.  Models can be for fine art that they sell or for models portfolios.  On some occasions they shoot time for prints (or CD), where there is mutual benifit.
