My name is Wanda Cobar and I am very passionate about designing sassy, sexy, sophisticated, whimsical and unique clothing.
I am always seeking to learn new techniques and how I can manipulate fabrics and materials. I love the art of fashion.
I learned how to sew in 1996 and never stopped! My goal is to design full time and eventually have a clothing line produced and manufactured in the US. Through this site I plan to make new contacts and gain greater exposure for my designs.
Here is how I got started, in 1993 I became greatly inspired by fashion ads in magazines and decided to study Fashion Design. I already had an art background from elementary school and I studied drafting in high school which helped me greatly in understanding patternmaking and being creative in my designs.
In 1998, with only having 1 year sewing experience I was selected to compete at theâ CONCOURS INTERNATIONAL DES JEUNES CRÃATEURSâ Competition in Paris, France. My garment was made out of lenticular plastic and oak tag paper.
In 1999, I received a 1 month scholarship to study at the American Intercontinental University in London. Upon my return I began working for various design companies such as Alyce Designs, Amerex Kids Group, She Beads and currently at Chicago Scenic Studios.
In 2000, I was hired by the dance dept at Stevenson High School to design dance costumes and I quickly became inspired by the dance world. Having this newfound passion has led me to design for Highland Park High School Dance Dept, Danza Viva Dance Studio in Oak Park and other independent dance companies.
One of my designs was shown at the Dance for Life Chicago 2009 show at the Harris Theater at Millennium Park.
In 2009, I was selected to be one of 4 finalists in the Nudie Jeans âRecycled Denim Maniacsâ competition: this garment will be shown at The Project Tradeshow in Las Vegas in February 2010. I was also featured as one of Chicagoâs Finest Designers by StyleChicago.com
These work experiences have greatly inspired the styles that I create. Today I work with personal clientele that have included performing artists such as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and I sell my work at different fashion and gallery events.
