*IMPORTANT!* - I know what you’re thinking – I know
you’ve seen Titanic, and I know
what Leo’ did – But bare with me, cos that is NOT
the kind of art I do!
My name’s Alan (….-also somewhat confusingly known as ‘Alao’!), and I’m a 26 year-old portrait artist, based up on the West coast of Lancashire. I graduated last year, and what makes my portraiture a bit different is I specialise in magic, illusion, and ‘steganography’ (the art of hiding secret messages within images). And maybe from that, you might gather it’d be quite difficult to explain just what I do, in a short and concise way? – Well, you’d be spot on! xD lol. So I’ve opted to just try and break it down to a few brief points. But if you have any questions or want me to elaborate on certain parts, then come at me, I’m all ears!
What I want to achieve
I want to create the most amazing portraits!
I want to create ‘clever’ art – Presenting something that’s visually gripping, but each time you look, you discover more little hidden tricks and details.
I want to create portraits that people can be really
I want to show that just because you’re not a famous actor or catwalk model with your faces in the magazines, then it doesn’t mean you’re not absolutely compelling.
I want to bring back personality, style, and fun, to portraiture.
And I also want to prove a point (where I can) that ‘sexy’ and ‘sex’ are two COMPLETELY
different things, and show that authentic ‘sexy’ really isn’t anything to do with the tiresome sleaze we’re all too familiar with!
How I want to do it
There are 3 criteria that, for me, will make a really great piece of art:
1) The instant visual appeal
: I want my portraits to really stand out from the very first moment and grip people’s attention by the proverbial balls!
2) The second layer of careful trickery
: I have a huge bag of tricks and games I’ve developed, using the steganography concept, to hide lots of secret messages, references, and even puzzles, actually WITHIN the drawing - Ranging from the simple and quirky, to the audaciously complex! And this gives the artwork a fun, interactive edge – Making it, hopefully, more than just a pretty picture!
3) Finding the most amazing people to draw
: You could be the greatest artist, writer, or musician in the World; But if you had nobody to inspire that, then you’d be pretty wasted, wouldn’t you? – That’s why I want to dedicate what I do to the most amazing people I meet in my life
Who I want to find
I LOVE that the first thing I ALWAYS
get asked about my work is: “Who is the person in the portrait…?!”
I’m obviously no Leonardo Da Vinci, and I don’t expect to find the ‘Mona Lisa’; But I want the people I draw to take on that kind of cult/mythical status – Really
serve as an icon
So I don’t so much want to draw ‘models’, but more ‘ROLE
I want to find the most amazing examples of human beings, who genuinely epitomise all the best things I find about life.
The key words for my work I hope to be: Cool
, and maybe Sexy
we’re thinking of the same definition!
I believe ‘sexy’ is not about wearing as little clothing as you can and/or trying to turn somebody on – I think real
‘sexy’ is about being fun, confident, and iconic. Being the person that everyone just wants to know and hang out with – Not the person everyone just wants to f*ck! xD
And I believe that everybody looks better clothed and/or accessorised, than they do naked – There may be 0.0000001% of the population with absurd bodies who defy this, but I still think it’s more fun with the other 99%
‘Personality’ rules over everything else: If you have the body and face of a God but act like a total b*tch, then I’m not really
gonna want to draw you, am I? lol
I LOVE fashion
, and believe the geometry of it is SO
important when composing a great image. I’m one of these people who could shamelessly shop for DAYS and not get tired. I’ve set up a look book on Tumblr to explain how fashion is really key to a lot of my work, and I’ll link it here when it’s ready.
I DO NOT
do full topless or nudes. I’ve never drawn a nipple, and never will. I think it’s a lot more fun to tease (which is sometimes where the aforementioned fashion comes in!), but I want to do it in a light-hearted, cheeky, ‘saucy postcard’ kind of way – If that makes any remote sense at all! xD lol.
I want to use video
quite heavily, attempting to capture very special ‘natural’ moments, rather than overly staging them. But I’d also love to use this to produce special little ‘teaser’ videos, similar to music videos, that just helps set the mood for the artwork coming out that it’s based on, or even to just give a more rounded/fun introduction to these ‘icons’ whom I want to find and draw
I’m quite keen to also mix illustration
with my normal drawing style, perhaps even adding well-known cartoon characters to add a good dose of friendly humour courtesy of Garfield, Snoopy, Looney Tunes, and friends!
My own concept of ‘modern pin-up
’ will also feature heavily in my new work, attempting to take the light-hearted fun of the classic pin-up artwork, but bring it into the modern day, by adding modern scenarios, modern culture, and modern fashions.
I’d also like to note that I’m not a complete kn*bhead – I’ve heard some awful stories about people (photographers) on here who look for people to work with, and then expect them to pay for the pleasure – Well not here! If I want your time, then I fully expect to pay for it. And if I need you to travel too, then I’d expect to pay for that as well! I think that’s only common courtesy, right?
….-I’ll have no doubt missed out a lot of things, and not quite made enough sense (if any!) about other things, so please don’t hesitate to message me. I’ve received so much support on this site in particular, it really means a lot, so thank you enormously to everyone who’s commented, TAG’d, and private messaged me! – And an especially large ‘well done’ for anyone who’s actually managed to get to the end of this without completely losing the will to live! xD lol. So now, shall we make some art?!
