My Name is Khanh Nguyen, founder and owner of Khanh Nguyen Fashion. I was born in Vietnam in 1983. When I was three years old, my father left Vietnam, as one of the boat people, to travel to America. He worked hard to raise enough money to sponsor my mom and me, and bring us to the states in 1992. I have lived with my parents in Chandler until recently. I am now living with my partner in Phoenix.
I started designing when I first started in college at Arizona State University in 2002. Since I was a kid, I've always enjoyed drawing and sketching. In school, I started designing dresses, and my family and friends encouraged me to develop my talent further. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from ASU. While in school, I took a lot of classes in art history, drawing and painting, and I learned a lot about color and texture and design. I also took one class that was directly fashion-related: introduction to sewing. My parents and friends, and most recently, my partner have all given me a tremendous amount of support in my fashion career. I am most influenced by many great designers such as Christian Dior and Alexander McQueen. I think my style is contemporary. I tend to go for linear shapes and abstracted floral patterns.
I love designing modern dresses. I like to design dresses that are practical for women to wear when going out or attending a special event. I get my inspiration from the random things around me. The things I see daily are the things that inspired me most. I am most proud that many people seem to like what I am designing. This gives me the motivation to continue working on my future shows. I try my best to reinvent myself every time I have a new show. The best way I think to innovate myself is to have a large quantity of designs in my portfolio. I can go back and carefully select the ones that are new and that I want to show, and which ones I feel may have already been done.
I think the female body can be beautiful with the right outfit. Elegance is the key, and I believe that fashion can help women to always look their best for any occasion. My best advice for our guy readers is to wear things that fit you. Men tends to wear things that are too loose on them. I believe it is because they feel more comfortable in loose clothing. Men tend to go more with the comfort than how an outfit looks.
The best way to make your mark in this industry is to keep yourself in front of the public, by constantly creating new designs, and showing them at fashion events. I hope to get the public to be more interested in what I am passionate about. Never give up on your dream.
