About MeMy name is Mario Singelmann and I’ve got a very unique fitness and training background. For starters, I once upon a time worked in education for six years in the Kansas City, Missouri School District, the last three as an assistant principal. I suppose at my core I am a teacher/coach.
Life took some turns and I changed my career path into the field of personal training. Desiring more control over my career and commitments, I decided a change was due, moved to Dallas, Texas, and formed 4 Quarters Fitness, my mobile personal training business, in 2010.
My experience in Dallas has been critical to my wealth of knowledge and success. In my time spent there, I was separately mentored in both powerlifting and the Paleo diet/lifestyle. Apparently I am a humble, willing, and desirable student because the mentoring I received was given to me for free, a result of others believing in my dedication and willingness to learn. My form of repayment was simply to be willing student that took advantage of the knowledge. That I was, and for my desire to humbly learn, I received lessons few could ever afford, and in some cases, ever receive.
Currently, I have just returned to Kansas City (Summer 2011) due to business and family pursuits. With my unique blend of knowledge in bodybuilding, educating, powerlifting, and Paleo, I was offered an opportunity to partner as an independent contractor at a recently opened gym in the diverse Waldo neighborhood. The gym caters to a clientele that will expect the best out of a gym and its trainers, and my invitation to train there resulted after a selection process seeking to recruit Kansas City’s finest.
I continue my participation in natural bodybuilding competitions, a self-imposed challenge to myself that I began in 2009. With my rigorous training, I felt the need to find out how I stacked up against other natural competitors. What I found was an outlet for my desire to still find athletic competition in my life. A former athlete in high school, participating in football, track, and even an all-state cross-country competitor in my only year of participation…the gym, and now natural bodybuilding, are an outlet for my desire for continued competition.
Additionally, I am a Paleo (“Caveman Diet”) Coach. I have helped many transform their bodies with my training and Paleo coaching. I’ve been mentored in Paleo from one of its leaders, Karen Pendergrass, of Paleo Approved, and pass along my unique blend of knowledge and experience on to those I collaborate with. And as a model of my commitment to Paleo, I competed in my last bodybuilding competition on a Paleo competition diet and won! My next challenge is to pursue my pro card in natural bodybuilding, and doing so as an athlete representing the Paleo solution.
As a personal trainer, my philosophy is to get results fast! I don’t believe in exercises that “look cool” but are actually less effective, let alone dangerous for novices. With much experimentation and experience, I know what the body can do (naturally) and how to manipulate diet and exercise to achieve the desired results. There is no obstacle or stage my clients will go through that I haven’t myself! I suppose my background in education and coaching innately pushes me to teach clients what do, and more importantly, why.
As a professional in the field of fitness, I feel the need to be a role model for a healthy lifestyle in exercise and diet. All too often I see personal trainers that themselves are out of shape. And they still have clients paying THEM to pass along their (limited) knowledge? In reaction, I pride myself in not being a typical bodybuilder or personal trainer that peaks for just a few days out of the year and the rest of the time explain that I’m in a “bulking/off season” stage.
I have recently begun work with photographers to get experience and network my way into the field of fitness modeling. One repeated compliment I receive is that I can indeed be “shoot” ready in a matter of a couple weeks. I can. I credit my training, bodybuilding background, and Paleo lifestyle and knowledge with my ability to manipulate my body to be “shoot” ready so quickly.
My future is one of starting over in Kansas City. I have become a partner in an upscale urban clothing boutique recently opened in the eclectic Crossroads district that provides unique clothing for young boys and men. Additionally, I have recently revamped 4 Quarters Fitness and have replaced it with Primal Fitness, which will more accurately represent my Paleo and “natural” training and diet beliefs, as well as fitting my branding need for future business expansion.
While building Primal Fitness, from the ground up, I will continue to actively pursue opportunities to work with quality photographers and venture into fitness modeling. At the same time, training remains a focus as I plan to compete again in Spring 2012 and pursue my pro card in natural bodybuilding as a Paleo competitor. I look forward to bringing a new style of training and diet knowledge to Kansas City and beyond, feeling that even though I left a very fitness rich community in Dallas, my niche in Paleo and “natural” training will allow me to be successful anywhere I go.
