My name is Javier Riobó Toste, also known as Javi Toste, my stage name. I was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Canary Islands), my mother's country, and moved to Galicia, in Spain's northwest, at the age of ten, to a small, coastal village called Bueu, my father's country. I'm the youngest of two sons. I grew up in a modest, hostile, dysfunctional, close-minded environment, so I've been forced to mature earlier than most, to become independent and to go on this life path on my own. The only person who has ever supported me is my mom. I think it's in the nature of every mother, but she can do not much for me. I've been immensely lucky of finding such wonderful people on my way, who I consider not just my friends, but the family I've never had.

Once finished High School, I began a Nursing Degree. I was there just for a year, because I had the feeling that I was doing what my family expected of me, not what I was really meant to, so I left home and started my acting training, getting a Bachelor's Degree four years later. At the age of nineteen, I worked as a nurse of an old, disabled patient, since I didn't get a scholarship and I had to earn some money. I also worked as a kind of insurance broker for a short period. After a brief stay in Madrid for castings, I went to an audition for a leading role in the new play of a theatre company located in my home area, and I got be casted. I participated not only in this, but in its following three shows, performing in many stages of Spain and Portugal for seven months. Since then, I've been running around Spanish geography, looking for new chances and working on occasional projects, including short films, workshops, commercials and voice acting jobs. I tried to get to the States a couple of times in order to do my way there, but chances I was offered were disappointing. I'd love to combine acting with teaching and volunteering. In fact, I'm looking forward to spend the whole next year on related projects in Eastern Europe.

I'm accustomed to discuss ideas and make suggestions, to share my thoughts, opinions, impressions and feelings with the rest as a main part of the creative process. I've got good social skills that enable me to communicate with every kind of people, no matter age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or any other human aspects. I'm used to work in teams, as well as lead them, with children, teenagers, adults, elder and disabled, as a cast and crew member in amateur and professional theatre companies. I've been taking part in plays, festivals and stage events since I was sixteen, in organizing, directing, assisting and performing roles. My job-related skills include singing, dance, mime, fencing, stage sound and lighting, set-atrezzo-costume design and makeup artistry. I'm also a self-taught piano and cello musician. Besides Spanish, I speak English and Portuguese.

I'm rebellious, honest, brave, adventurous, stubborn, sensitive, patient, peace-loving and curious. My philosophy consists of living just with the essential, what for me includes breathing, thinking, working, feeding and resting. I don't need to compare myself to the rest. Each single body has her/his virtues and flaws, her/his strengths and weaknesses, her/his own vision of life according to her/his education, personality, relations, experiences and circumstances, so no one is better than other, but simply different. The way of thinking that commands the world nowadays is quite sad and worrying, just based on making money and reaching superficial things like power, fame or success. Sometimes, I have the feeling that we, people from the wrong-called First World, don't notice we've got an end, as everything else, that we always try to look like youngsters, no matter the age we are, that we don't accept death as a main part of the living cycle, so we ignore it during our time and cry when it comes. I think we've got to learn how to deal with bad things in order to appreciate good ones, and the hell with complaints. Our arrogance and selfishness is going too far, and if we don't put ourselves on limits, someday Mother Earth is gonna strike us back, make us pay for everything we've done to it.

My love for animals and environment is so deep. I'm really aware of its rights and protection, and I want to join ecologist NGOs that defend them. I'm also in the process of beginning a vegan diet. I think the problem is not eating animals, but the cruelty of massive food production chains. I've met disrespectful vegans who don't realize that humans have ever included meat, fish, eggs and dairy products in their feeding, that they have tamed some species from the very past, so the question is: should we set those free and break ecosystem balance once again, or maybe keep them as pets like cats or dogs? Instead of it, I think we've got to replace non-ethical food factories by sustainable farms that guarantee the best conditions for animals, as well as the best product quality for consumers. All the same, I'm determined to take this step and eat only vegetables for the rest of my life.

I chose art because it allows me to improve myself with no limits, because I really need to do something I can devote to, something intellectually stimulating. I work because it's natural to do it, not for money. This may sound like ascetic, but, if I had a faith, I'm sure that I would be a monk, not an actor, because I love silence, quietness and concentration you can reach from spiritual isolation. I'm atheist, I just believe in science, but I deeply respect every religion as long as they make people better and bring happiness to their lives.

Show business tends to mix up beauty and talent, making audience think they're the same, but there's a huge difference between both. Models, I mean, workers of this industry who just can stand out for their physic, catch people's eyes, but real artists stir up brains, and I aspire to become one of them. I don't care about how do I look or what people thinks of my appearance. I don't dream my face to step on cover magazines. My body is just a bunch of hair, flesh, bones and blood, there's nothing attractive about it. I've never gone to a gym and I'll never do. I hate fashion and its frivolity. I don't accept jobs that include sex or nudity content. I just want to be known for my acting skills.

As an artist, I'm mad about everything related to my craft, specially to the Romanticism period. Lots of people have told me that I look like a romantic, and I've always taken it as a compliment. In fact, I've ever had the feeling that I was born in the wrong century. For me, there's nothing more fascinating than somebody can turn the darkest side of humans into the brightest by the magic of art. I've been inspired by such composers like Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Hector Berlioz, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Modest Mussorgsky, Antonín Dvořák, Edvard Grieg, Giuseppe Verdi, Arvo Pärt and so on; writers like Euripides, Dante Alighieri, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire, Leo Tolstoy, Henrik Ibsen, Maurice Maeterlinck, Ramón María del Valle-Inclán, Franz Kafka and so on; filmmakers like Georges Méliès, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Charles Chaplin, Luis Buñuel, Alfred Hitchcock, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sergio Leone, Roman Polanski, Miloš Forman, Michael Haneke and so on; actors and actresses like Alec Guinness, Gregory Peck, Max von Sydow, Fernando Fernán-Gómez, Geoffrey Rush, Marlene Dietrich, Judi Dench, Terele Pávez, Isabelle Huppert, Frances McDormand and so on; singers and bands like Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Metallica, Apocalyptica, Rammstein, Slipknot and so on.

Hope you've found interesting what I've written about myself.
