Susan J Chen is a photographer who was born in East L.A., but has never met Cheech Marin. She's lived in California, London, Orlando, upstate New York, next door to a chicken pen in Harlem, Brooklyn and a New York City hotel room when her NY apartment was set on fire like a baked Alaskan flambé.
Susan began her career learning from master photographer Mary Ellen Mark. Her coolest encounter while at her studio was meeting Lou Reed and being offered a cigarette. Aside from assisting many photographers in NY, she has worked as a photo editor, photographed for film productions and various print/online media, occasionally producing, spent years as an advertising executive and perfecting the art of couch surfing (post-fire nest to-come). She is also a digital tech (Capture One certified), and would love to shoot and edit more video projects.
Susan has also worked for important social causes. In a month long shoot, she photographed a group of men participating in the global freak show known as MOVEMBER which raises awareness and funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. She photographed all the participants on a daily basis in a mugshot scene which made them progressively sketchier by the day. Susan regrets any future political dreams of these men that might have been dashed in the making of this project.
Susan’s work was recently exhibited at the MOPLA + Smashbox Studios group show in Los Angeles.
