I am Patrick Andraste
I have a fascination with shiny things and a fascination with mechanical things. A friend calls it “Mechanophelia“.
I used to have a day job as an engineer. I would sit in a cubicle all day and figure out how to make things work. Then I took some pictures that made a lot of people upset, and after 28 years of working for the same corporation I was fired from said day job because of my photography.
I call that series of images my graduation from art school. When I can piss off that many people, I must be doing something right.
I have had the police called on me so many times. I have been threatened with arrest a few times. The thing is I am never doing anything technically illegal. I just sort of dance on the fine edge.
I never thought of myself as much of a photographer let alone an artist. I started out taking pictures as a way to document what I was doing. Sort of “pictures or it did not happen”
I try to take photographs that have more to tell than just what is on the surface. When you look at them, hopefully you will see more and more.
I have been photographing things in earnest since 1996. I was first published in 2000. I never did get copies of that publication. It was considered obscene and I was put on a customs “watch List” for about three years. I had a large ball of green customs inspection tape since everything that was mailed to me got inspected.
I have an eclectic selection of cameras to work with from medium format to digital to underwater. Depending on the shoot and the project, I can shoot film or digital.
I usually only do paid shoots. If there is a particular collaboration I am really interested in I will do trade.
My real e-mail is patrick @ andraste.com it is best to contact me that way
