About Me

I'm not sure if I would call it a style, which might signal elements of affectation, my photography is part of my sculptural practice, and I have been using the human form to interact with single sided corrugated paper since art schools would hire models for me. I make all the forms myself, spontaneously, with the model in front of me; beginning with covering someone to articulating their form or manipulating the overall shadow and light. I use the lines of the paper as a visual device to draw or sculpt in the ultimately flat environment of the image and I try to use direct sunlight as my light source. I am still learning about studio lights and flash, during the Winter months, but Summer is the season I prefer for this activity.

I like a shoot to be light and funny and often the model and I laugh at the absurdity of it, but I am focused and I do like to achieve serious and professional results. With these digital and analogue photographs I might make them into paintings or large scale prints, which I'm more than happy to exchange for the model's time and talent. The fact that the activity is sustainable and economic appeals to me, although now I buy the paper in large rolls, in the past I used to find it thrown away. The rolls are made from recycled paper, so the colour can be variable; off-white, grey, cream, sand, mushroom or buff. Sometimes however, I just paint it pink.
