D Robinson

I have been a photographer for more than 30 years.  I have 15 years of film experience and more than 15 years of digital experience.  Also more than half a century of life experience.

I have more than 15 years experience with Adobe Photoshop and do all my own postproduction work.  Which means the images never leave my control.

I worked 15 years for a California Community College in the Community Services/Public Relations Department, as the lead photographer.  During that time I shot every facet of the college, including thousands of young people.  More recently I spent three years with the Coast Guard Marine Safety Office in Alameda as their official photographer.  During that time I documented all facets of Coast Guard life.

I've been in the Coast Guard reserve for more than 32 years.  What that translates to is I've been subject to drug testing for as long, held and hold a security clearance, saved people's lives, and provided assistance when it was needed.  It also means I get frustrated when people can't make decisions or live up to their commitments.  I've seen many people on here make commitments in the form of a scheduled photo shoot.  Next the person either gets a better offer or parties too much the night before.  The end result is they don't show up for the shoot, they don't call, they simply ignore it and trust it will go away.  This may have worked with your boyfriend or girlfriend in high school but you're an adult now and other people are going to treat you as an adult.  If you can't be trusted to show up why should anyone take the risk with a more complex or costly photo shoot.  Also karma has a sick sense of humor.

I'm serious about the things that I pursue.  I've taken time off to pursue photography.  I am, and have been a professional and I would hope that people I work with would have the same attitude.  I'm not pursuing this from a cookie-cutter standpoint, each model is looked at as an individual with posing, lighting, and content for the individual.

Anyone can go out, buy a camera, read the manual, print some business cards, and call themselves a photographer.  I'm not one of them.

On the subject of friend requests.  I feel friends are people that you actually know their real name.  In this portfolio my friends list is people I've actually worked with and can recommend for other jobs.

My other profile" Photoshop wizard" is less stringent as I work with people over the phone, through the Internet, and by e-mail.  In many cases that work doesn't even carry my name as it needs to appear as untouched.


Overall types of shooting I have done:  Sports (basketball, football, track, baseball, softball, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, volleyball, soccer, dance, field and ice hockey, rodeo, tennis, skateboard, archery, weight training, golf), fashion (preshow shots for publicity and the fashion show), criminal justice (procedural shots, graduations, driving exhibitions, criminal takedown and building searches), action (car and boat races, hill climbs), artistic (mood, shadow, dramatic lighting or night), event (concerts, awards, graduations, stage productions, chorus productions, conferences, promotional, guest speakers), community involvement, day-to-day life, public information, construction, insurance and litigation, agriculture, automotive, demonstrations, campus activities, student activities, architectural, aerial,  science and technology, warranty, nursing, food preparation,  firefighting, wildlife, landscapes, infrared, ultraviolet, and environmental portraiture.

I currently show my work in 1 gallery in the Sacramento area.
