It's not your fault really, my french just never surpassed the level of "Parlez plus lentement, s'il vous plait?". And a recent visit to the Elzas just made things worse: that aint french, that's just francogermanwhatevernonsense. So hence the irritation. French people: a-okay. Fast-talking French people: pure evil.
