What is a model: Models are professional persons whose physicality and presence is used to create Art. Such Art is then accepted or denied  (often both) by mainstream society for purposes of advertising as well as corporate or personal resale. A model's value is based on his/her ability, quality, and willingness. Models are people, but also commodities. As such, models should care for their faces, hair, and body in the same way that I care for all my equipment. These are your tools. Being attractive is an asset, but not a prerequisite for modeling. You must be motivated and driven. Models should be educated in posing and facial expressions, as well as industry standards for portfolio. It takes twenty minutes on Google to find out what agencies are looking for. Invest the time in your career. Paying one or two great photographers for excellent photos will save you a lot of time and money on gas.
