About me
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF DON AUSTIN PHOTOGRAPHY
Born and raised in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, I didn’t pick up a camera until the late 80’s and now I own 2 35mm SLRs and one digital SLR.
Thanks to my father and his camcorder I got my first 35mm, the Canon T50.
After many bad pictures and wasted rolls of film I traded the T50 in for a T70.
During the mid to late 80’s and early 90’s most of my photography lessons came from either my dad or K.D Morris of Then Choyce Photography. When the spoken word craze hit Philly I was snapping away at the many poetry events around the city, following PHYRENEYCE (K.D Morris and Ronnie Way). After beating that camera to the ground I traded up to the Nikon 90. I continued to shot, mainly nature and still life where my passion still life. As a big time jazz lover I have done photography at Ortliebs Jazz Haus. 847 n 3rd St. I have photos of many famous artist such as Duane Eubanks, Tim Warfield, Christian McBride and the well know Ortliebs Haus band, featuring Mike Boone, Byron Landom, Sid Simons, Mickey Rocker, and Pete Saunders (owner of Ortliebs Jazz Haus)
Photography in my later yrs changed drastically after I became a train conductor, it allowed to see new places and to take advantage of my new found hobby.
I began to shoot in places like The Bronx Zoo, The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and the New York Botanic Gardens in the Bronx. I have been in 3 art shows given by Amtrak and Phillip Rudolph.
My passion for photography lies in still life and nature. I prefer the quiet setting of Longwood Gardens as apposed to running around making sure the bride and groom are standing in the right spot or that everyone is looking at the camera. I can shoot the same thing for hrs and unless I get tired the flowers with never complain or ask I’m I done yet.
Up until about 2002 all of my lessons were from Kyle Morris or anyone I could learn from, I have also picked up a few tricks from some of the many photography magazines that I read. By the time I had any formal classroom lessons I was carrying around a Nikon n80, f100 and 5 different lenses and a host of other gadgets. I was hrs in Central Park and Longwood Gardens just snapping away. In 2003 I met Mimi, an instructor at The Art Institute of Phila who also has her own studio in the Manyunk section of phila. I learned about lighting, portraits and wedding photography. After having shot 3 weddings I prefer to do fashion and still life.
At this time I am shooting mainly with my Nikon D70 and learning the art of digital photography. Thanks to a couple of my new neighbors I have acquired a lot of knowledge since I began shooting digital. So here I am, starting a new chapter in the world of DON AUSTIN PHOTOGRAPHY. Again I’d like to thank K.D Morris for his lessons in life and photography, Mimi for sharing her knowledge in the classroom and not to forget my father Henry Tucker it would take to long to give you all the thanks you deserve. And for all the lessons in life you have taught me… And oh yeah for losing interest in photography and letting you camera collect dust!
Some TFP/CD shoots are welcome!!!
