I use a stage-name as well - mostly just for safety on the internet - you know - wierdos.

However, I do let photographers I am working with in on the real deal.  I think I would feel wierd having someone call me something other than my real name during a shoot - I might not respond! :-)  I however, don't use my last name ever if I can possibly help it.  It's not foolproof but, it might deter people who would be potential stalkers...I can't imagine having anyone stalk me but, i guess it's a just in case.

Your name is your brand. In any business, name recognition is everything. I routinely tell people that want to see my work to do a google search on my name.

Why anyone, especially a photographer, would use anything but their real name or studio name in everything they do is beyond me.

To be completely honest, everytime I see a photographer using anything but his name or studio name, I know he is not legitimate because if he were, he sure as heck wouldn't be hiding his identity.

Models should think the same way. Use your name or a variation that you stick with permanently. And try to make it professional. After all, your name is your image and image is what is going to get you hired. Cutsie pie, made up names just make the person using it sound like a ditzy high schooler.

True, but as a model when your original intention was to kinda anonymously try and make some cash off your bewbees while you were still able, your professional identity isn't real high on that list of priorities. wink

I use my studio name for my branding. That way I as a person don't have to be pigeon holed into one set style or look.

I have used many names for films and other photo work. I have about three names other than the one my parents gave me on my birth certificate. Only my hairdresser knows for sure what thereal name is. LOL!

I have worked with models who have gone through many names. They still get work because we all know who they are. The hair color changes, the name changes and the limits of what they are willing to do changes. The phone number and person are still the same. The internet trail just gets cold with the old names.

Just remember: A rose is a rose by any other name....

The difference being that you have branded the "Miss Conduct" name by using it for your website and permanent web identity. Much as if I used a studio name instead of my own. Proof of your success in branding is in the 34,000 google hits that a search gets. That name also fits the persona you've created. That cannot be said for the majority of the girls using alias's out there.

I keep a sudo-company name to eliminate personal connections and avoid liability.

But then again, I'm changing my last name to Inc to hide behind that corporate veil. wink

I have used my company's name since I formed it.  I have used other names while doing other things but professionally (art/photography) this is the only one that I use.

Hahaha, yeah but if I had realized that there was a chance I would wind up being known by anything, I would have made sure it wasn't something that caused me to giggle like a nut whenever anyone addressed me.
I can't even say it without laughing.

Nothing's wrong with an alias, long as it doesn't sound like a porn name or some crappy pet name.... Unless you're in the porn industry. lol

Then I probably shouldn't mention that I used to work under the name of Lance Studswell, eh?

I have been Zendragon for a long time... started out on the internet (e-mail) and as a martial artist, the two have meaning for me.  People call me Zen for short but my name is Keith.  When the time comes and my photo site goes live it will be Visions Of Zen.

So now because of my various work on the web and in the industry, people call me Zen, Keith or Zendragon and they all work just fine.

Hi Clara,

I have always maintained the same "pseudonym" name for close to 8 years now.  It is very important, at least for me, to be able to maintain the privacy of my personal life versus that of my professional life.

Although I am not sure how photographers feel about it.  But I really think that it is a personal preferance.  And depends on what areas of the different industries that you work in.

Warm Regards,

Ms. Isadora VonPainne

I've been using the alias "Moraxian" on the net for over  decade.  I've had the AOL screen name (created to roleplay in their free-form RP areas as the evil villain...) since 1994, and have the domain names, etc. since then.

My real name is Chris... I've gone by various alias on the web over the years, but Saryn Angel is them name that I go by 90% of the time. I always introduce myself as Saryn.  It sticks out in your head a bit more than Chris... how many freekin Chris' or Christinas are there out there?

My site/company name is Saryn Angel Photography. *shrugs* it works for me.

regarding changing your name - my whole reason for coming up with an alias was to help people remember who I am. When you change your name, it ruins any reputation you have built up - unless that is really what you want to do.......

I like using my own name. However, too many people (Mexicans of course) are named just like me. A google just bring too many daniel martinez. My website is similar to other photographers in the US who are named daniel martinez. Just within my small cirlce of friends, I know 5 Daniels! Maybe in a few years ahead, I might start using an alias but only for business purposes. If I can avoid it, I will!

I'm not in favor of models (or photographers) using wacky handles like "photodragon67" or "Lipsnhips" (my apologies if those are real names).  If you're going to Ford or Elite, you're not going to give them a made up name, so why do it if you want people to treat you like a professional?  I can understand using aliases for security reasons, but stick to one name that you can use professionally.  When I see crazy names on portfolios, I think there may be crazy people behind them.

...getting down off my soapbox and crawling back under the rock now...

My alias/stage name is actually just a switch of my real name, Numidas, which I really make no effort to hide or show either way. I've been told both that my real name is good enough of a stage name or that noone would be able to pronounce it/remember it and thus I should use something else. I figured DasNumi was a bit of a compromise (which Numi? Das Numi! And since I have a burlesque act or two where I dress up as a boy the whole neuter thing works)... I dunno. It's Hard thinking up a good name, damnit!!!
