This image was taken by the photographer, and then photoshoped again by a friend... do you think it's overdone now?

I'd have to say it was overdone a bit. It looks like softening was applied to the image as a whole, and then removed from select areas. The softening should also have been removed from your eyebrows as well (that area was left soft and it doesn't look quite right). But the softening overall needs to be toned down some, and I'm not fully sure its needed anyway. I know when I first started applying softening to images using Photoshop (as opposed to the softening I did in the darkroom) I tended to overdo it. I now apply quite a bit less softening (and I don't use it on every image I take); I try to make the image look natural and not obviously altered. Properly done, it can be an effective effect.

My favorite technique for softening skin is to do a rough selection of the skin, avoiding the eyes, lips, and nose.. Doesn't have to be a perfect selection... just a general outline. Then I feather about 10 pixels and apply a heavy heavy gaussian blur. Then Edit>Fade Gaussian Blur.. and I take the opacity way down to where you can just start to see the texture of the skin.

Ok.. I see the original. What exactly are you trying to do? Just soften the skin?

I would suggest hitting the "problem" spots with the healing brush and apply a lighter version of the softening (and not keeping the eyebrows soft). I think it works well, its just overdone a bit. By the way, I like your portfolio overall; you have some very nice photos in it.

here's a quick edit.. I just softened the skin subtly.. so you may have to look at the original and the edit back to back to see the changes. You want to have some texture in the skin otherwise it looks way to fake. Tell me what you think:
