Thanks to Grant's generosity, I got to kill my night retouching one of the raw images he has provided through the following post.

I won't be able to share every single detail, but I want briefly talk about it.

Before and After

Whenever I retouch for beauty head shots, I find flipping picture upside down helps focus on the composition.

This is the beginning stage. I ran the raw through Capture One Pro. I cooled down the color temperature and increased the high light dynamic. Then I maximized the Sharpen, threshold and clarity. I also increased some saturation and vignette.

1. I used the healing tool to clean up the skin. I zoomed in 200% and cleaned out for about one and half hours.

2. I played with color balance to give accent to her eyes and lips.

3. I used many different layering techniques for her skin and her hair.

4. I used the clone stamp tool to duplicate hair.

5. I used a sample texture image I found for her inner skin.

6. I used liquify tool to reshape everything.

I think the best thing to do when it comes to hyper realistic retouching is to take time and don't over think too much. Also, I think, seeing the final work visually in your head prior to the start is important.

I would like to hear what you think worked and what didn't work in this image.

Thanks

Awesome, Paul!

One thing. You might want to link that second image instead of displaying it. Otherwise, this thread might get locked. Blood/violence is considered Mature subject matter.

well, I personally have never seen a dead body, but when you see one, wouldn't you see in from a side rather than standing with her body in between your legs?

Well, the only thing that jumps out to me, other than the awkward positioning of the cut as someone else mentioned (and hey, who is going to land a perfect decapitation slice on every fight with the undead?) is that beneath the skin there's just red meat.

Maybe it's the horror fan in me.  Maybe it's all the fantasy books.  Or maybe it's just that analytical side of my brain, but shouldn't there be some hint of bone structure in there?  Either the white of bone the uneven texture of the blood over the bone and meat?

Hope this feedback helps.  Even with this criticism, you've done a fare better photo-edit than I am capable of.  (It doesn't take a skilled hand to see detail, it's the eye that sees it.  But my hand can't produce everything my eye can see.)
