Is anyone using After Effects for still images? I've seen some amazing 3d lighting and other effects done for motion images, and wonder if anyone is using this for stills?

Not unless I'm making a still image animation.

For still images, its POSSIBLE that you might accidentally do something funky with Colorama. But Photoshop is really a better tool for it.

Maybe you can get a very natural random frame generated with the Particle System, but if you are really doing that it becomes obvious that you are intentionally going out of your way to force yourself to use After Effects to do it. That would be more of a proof of concept than anything practical.
