I just asked Rick Miller to make a comment in here, I'm very interested to hear what he has to say about Adobe education. For those of you who don't know, Rick is affiliated with Adobe.

I am interested to hear his response as well. I'll give you my honest opinion:

I am in a state college now working towards my BAS in photography, and an AS in Business Management. My first two "photoshop" classes were well below the levels of profeiciency that I have achieved on my own. Retouching is a true artform and I really don't think you can "teach" it. I mean you can learn the operations of the various methods/filters/masks/blending methods, etc, etc but over time you will learn your own methods of how to apply all of these tools.

I am in no way saying don't go to school, but I am saying spend your money wisely. Hell, if I can afford it, I'll be in school for long time to come and I am 40. smile

Not saying that school is not the way to go, but why pay if you have free tutorials all over the internet that can show you the way? That's how I've learned

the one photography/post processing class I took was dreadfully slow and I learned nothing hmm

No, at least in my experience one Junior college class isn't going to get you to that level.  If you take a couple of classes and do a lot of outside work you would get to a good level of knowledge but not "great".  The problem with college classes is they have to go at a pretty slow speed so that the average student isn't left behind.  I've taken a community college class and I still suck.  Mostly because I got bored  going over very basic things for the first two months.  Processes that might be the first 2-3 chapters in a good photoshop book.

You might get lucky and find a really good teacher or class but I've heard other students complain about photoshop classes at the JC level.

Greetings,

It honestly depends on the particular school and the dedication of the teacher(s) running the program. Heck, the photography program at Seattle Central Community College (which includes top-notch Photoshop classes) has a two-year waiting list because their program is so well thought of.

I'm on the road 4-6 days out of the week talking to and interacting with Adobe's educational and commercial partners. I've come across some amazing JC programs where their students are putting out some amazing work because they have teachers who really care.

You're based in Los Angeles, so you have access to some outstanding JC Photoshop programs: Santa Monica College, Glendale Community College, Pasadena City College, and Orange Coast College (just to name a few). When I taught Photoshop at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena I would have in my classes many students who had transferred from these JC programs and I was usually impressed with their work. Some teachers (with big time credentials) from the Art Center College of Design even taught at these same JC programs (and some still teach at Art Center AND the particular JC).

A really talented photographer (and pinup model) here on Model Mayhem, Riley Kern, graduated from Orange Coast College's photography program where she took some excellent Photoshop classes. Riley indicates on her profile that OCC is "highly recommended". She is now going to the Art Center College of Design based upon her portfolio developed at OCC.
I know Riley because I photographed her before she got into photography and started attending OCC's program. She is now one of my top three favorite pinup photographers, and at Art Center she has expanded her portfolio to do some very cool fashion stuff.

Adobe recently held the 2nd annual Adobe Education Summit at the Santa Fe, New Mexico workshops. It was a 7 day Lightroom and Photoshop bootcamp for top photographic educators (who were chosen by other colleges). We had many JC programs represented (including Santa Monica College which is near you).

Another local program, Pasadena City College, has a digital media program run by
Laurie Burriss who even has training programs available on www.lynda.com - she is definitely a teacher who knows her stuff!

As I indicated up front, it honestly depends on the particular school and the dedication of the teacher(s) running the program. I think that this is an excellent opportunity for people to post JC programs that they've had excellent experience with.

Cheers!

Is there some way we can tell you are an authority on this subject, because I think your statement is pure BS. Possibly you have some credentials or a body of work that would in some way substantiate your claim.

Hey Rick, thanks for the response and the recommendations! Now that the valley girls are taken care of, is there any kind of reference in place at Adobe for similar recommendations throughout the world? Does Adobe itself provide any educational environments? For instance, is there a place in Chicago that some of the local wizards could attend in an effort to better hone their skills?

I don't think he meant that in a bad way. I think he was just trying to say that some people are naturally talented artists which is something you can't learn in school. I really don't think he's discreting any school or program where PS is taught. At least I hope not cause I'd kill to attend a program like that!

My take is that he's dropping one line attitude bombs, which I kind of hate. I figure if you haven't got anything constructive to say, keep quiet. On the surface, you might think that makes me a hypocrite, what with all the nasty one liners I zing around in here. But, my purpose with those one line zingers, is to get people to knock off the bullshit. I figure if I embarrass them enough, they'll go away.

lol true... but I kinda took it as it just sounded like it was full of attitude but really wasn't meant that way. But I get what you're saying. I really hate crappy opinionated people especially with nothing to back it up.

But enough thread hijacking. I learn a lot here and I really appreciate the original poster!

I am very interested in quality Adobe training here in the Greater Toronto Area. I took two courses at 2 different local JC (Sheridan College and Humber College) and they were a joke; I learned way more from Lynda or ScottKelby videos from what those courses delivered..

I don't remember the year any longer, I think it was in 92' that Kodak opened the Center For Creative Imaging in Camden, Maine. I was fortunate enough to be an invited attendee during their inaugural month of operation. Color Studio and Photoshop 1.0 were the programs they were teaching. The environment was absolutely electric, the dedication of the staff and students was intense and the amount learned was incalculable.

I wish you people had the same opportunity, and I'm hoping Rick has an answer for this need.

I took two photoshop classes at a local JC.  They were fun, and informative, but, we only spent about a week on retouching.  You may wish to take a specific workshop on retouching.

My experience in JC classes was not so good. I haven't found an instructor locally that I thought could teach me anything. I keep looking though.
