HDR is high dynamic range.
It usually involves multiple images at different
exposure settings either manually blended or
using software.

CS2 had merge to HDR if I remember but I was never
fond of the results.

I much prefer manual blending using stacks and masks.

For the lazy ...

... when you take a pic involving let's say a sunlit area (very bright) and shadows (comparatively dark) ... if you shoot the sunlit area at the proper exposure, the dark are will be in the mud (dark, dark, dark).

If you shoot the shadows at the proper exposure, everything else will in essence be burned out.

If your camera is held very steady (as in tripod) and subject not moving between the two (OR MORE) exposures, the two exposures can be combined by manually masking out the over and underexposed areas in each image ... and blending in some fashion, so that the detail is seen in all areas.

... that's kind of the concept ...
