just messing around. hope its not late to post.

main workflow was copying the blue channel pasted over the original with multiply, desaturated the image and then gradient color, and some D&B.

Yeah I can a similar effect from sharpening, but it's doing both - giving me white and black edges.

Might be a sharp done in darken mode.
By doing an apply-image (proper highpass like) sharp, then creating a new flatten-image layer (cmd+alt+shift+e) set to "Darken", you will have only the black strips, I think.

A while ago i did this image inspired by Gucci look, which is awesome, and in same time a bit boring since everybody start using this color style.
I don't know how they do this, but my way is duplicate blue channel/Multiply 50-80%/Shadow-Highlights on B channel, with a small touch of saturation. smile

The colorization is based on this reference:

https://www.dorianmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Nikola-Jovanovic-Raquel-Zimmermann-Gucci-Fall-Winter-2010.11-01.jpg

Note: In a more detailed retouch the hands and the face should be matched in color. Now they are visibly different as only CC was done.

which one is JL method? i want to try it too george

Sorry as the original poster, I ended up doing this a while back. You can achieve this even with 2 selective color layers. But this ones an old with green and blue channels. But I've been able to do the same with a selective color layer smile

used channel mixer to darken the skin tones. then used curves to tweak colors in LAB space. applied selective color to further tweak colors. finally used curves to increase contrast.

This technique is similar to Image-Adjusments and then Black & White then set the layer blending to multiply - like so you have more control over the effect than using only one chanel

If you want more subdued colors in the model and foreground, play around with a selective color adj. layer. In the reds and yellows, increase black and cyan.

This thread has 225 replies, but not a single one explaining how to exactly move from "before" to "after" smile Probably because between them it was never just a color grading, but also full retouching included.

There was short explaination in the beginning, but it was unclear, then there was some replies explaning it.
I tried achieve similar effect and while I can see I am heading in the good direction I wasn't able to get satisfactory result.
Maybe because some parts was coloured by hand and I am trying to do everything globally.

Can any person who uploaded PSD before do it again? smile

I also think this technique includes lots of masking. Like skintone masking. Colour masking

Yes - commercial color grading - the stuff you see like the ads referenced here, use a lot of masking. Seldom is it a technique that you can just apply to the image as a whole.

Sorry. It seems the link has expired and I also don't have the file locally any. But I think I have explained in an earlier post how it is done.

why do none of these links ever work?  and why can't anyone ever answer this question?  i've been attempting for years to master this look too but no one knows.  I am getting pretty close in my own workflow but nothing i can pin-point specifically.  i've tried every technique, masking and all that, and i'm still convinced it's an industry secret.

I have answered this question and described the procedure years ago. Check earlier posts from George Anchev (my photographer profile).

Here is one:

Also if someone who has downloaded my TIFF at that time and keeps it, it would be good to share it back.
