I still haven't been to Europe, well besides Spain.  What are the most beautiful European towns and cities in your opinion?

I was doing some Google Maps searches earlier and found the following picturesque locals in Italy, amazing, Google Maps is so cool!:

I was pretty impressed by Amsterdam. Especially as seen from the canals.

OMG it's gorgeous, especially at night. We took a Museumnacht tour of some galleries/chapels via an antique streetcar that is apparently trotted out just for the occasion.

According to Fox News it makes Beirut look like Pleasantville though.

The azulejos of Lisbon make the city a giant art gallery and museum.

Pretty much any city that didn't get destroyed in WWI or WWII is fabulous!
Some of their newer buildings are 200 years old.  Our oldest are barely that old.

There are just sooo many...
The title of your post IS proper...Cities vs towns...
Many of the major cities are well preserved and that old world craftsmanship
astonishes most Americans...Paris is a masterful mix of old & new!
Berlin,Stockholm,Amsterdam,London,Madrid,Prague...all have such great history, architecture and yet still have a modern vibe and energy...
All among my faves...but would make almost anyones list.
A few underated, smaller places IMO are:
Bruges,Belgium...Delft,Holland...Helsinki,Finland...Bristol,UK...Brest,France...
Copenhagen,Denmark...Lisbon,Portugal and Vienna,Austria

Just sooo many places would make my list....not even enough room here!!!
Rome would also make my personal list.

In no particular order...

Paris
Seville
Prague
Rome
Geneva
Zurich
Nice
Vienna
Zermatt
London
Edinburgh
Salzburg

...and just about any small town West of Turin right along the South of France coast! This is the region that places like Malibu, Santa Barbara, Laguna etc shamelessly imitated!

Pfft...not

Parts of Prague are clearly beautiful
But there is a whole bunch of Prague that looks like it just suffered the blitz

Truthfully though, there are WAY too many cities that are just beautiful in Europe
Compared to America, the cities over there are magnificent

The US is just too young to have much character in its cities. I've been to London, Berlin, Bruges, Dubrovnik, Prague, Milan, Venice, Sofia, Gent, Split, Zagreb and Vienna. Dubrovink and and Prague were my favorites, with Berlin and Bruges close behind. The weirdest thing, though, is the Reichstag in Berlin. It's this really old building with a glass dome on it. The glass is there because the allies bombed the hell out of it during WWII. For some reason, the Germans decided to replace the (marble?) dome with glass.

The Reichtag was deliberately not restored as a way of reminding people that things can never be the same for Germany post WW2.

Seriously, Budapest is just lovely.  The view from Fisherman's Bastion over the Danube to the Parliament Building is just stunning.  And Matthias Church, which is in front of the Bastion, is SO beautiful.  I want to go there again.  And to Prague.

No, all kidding aside, I adored the capital city of Rhodes (so much character) and Rhodes overall and Venice.

Same for Warsaw, only city that had the privilege to be razed to the ground in 1944 after the Insurrection (not the same as the ghetto uprising the year before but the polish resistance provided all the weapons to used then as they were stockpiling for August 1944's action). And first such even since the Romans razed Carthage to the ground 2000 years before.

Anything you will see in Warsaw is less than 60 years old, and I mean *anything*, including the lowliest park. It had to be restored from paintings and some salvaged blueprints.

Every street corner has a list of people, sometimes 50-100 at a time, executed against walls by the Germans. Including bullet holes.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zizzxcs91ug/TpEAxmbRENI/AAAAAAAACuQ/1a4T0zfAHoE/s1600/85pc+of+Warsaw+destroyed+Center_+ruins+of+Old+Town+Market+Place+Warsaw+1944.jpg

"The battle for Warsaw has entered its second month. The Old Town sector has been abandoned but within its ruins German troops have been patrolling the area and executing any civilian survivors and wounded insurgents who were left behind in the hospitals.  No one has been spared. At the start of the Uprising, it was Himmler's express order that German troops take no prisoners - that every Polish man, woman, and child be shot on sight for the purpose of teaching the rest of the world what the Reich is capable of doing. While Paris has been celebrating its' liberation Warsaw is being targeted for annihilation."

A reminder that just like Germany, Japan, and Italy, Poland also lost WWII and wasn't among the victors, thanks to the Western Betrayal orchestrated by the traitors Churchill and Roosevelt.

I'm just beginning my European travels. I've only been to Berlin, where my family lives, Quedlinburg, Leipzig, and Prague.

Prague is gorgeous, and I loved Quedlinburg. Potsdam is fun to visit.

Some see beauty in old towns, some see beauty in glass and stell modern buildings. Nothing to blame, just a matter of tastes.
Towns in my country i would reccomend will be Sighisoara, Sibiu, also Brasov. Nice cities with old town in the center, hotels in the old fortified town in Sighisoara, bars and so on.
