For the models.

Tyra made reference to this once on ANTM and it always kind of stuck with me, ha!  The reasoning behind the classifications are that models stand out from the crowd among a sea of girls who can be described as "pretty, but not a model" ("mall pretty"!) ...

So, I'll tell you from my perspective!
Does your portfolio/look say "mall pretty" or "model"?

Please note - This says nothing about your potential to model.  Especially art models who one might not recognize on the street as a model.

You're 5'11" and have a model look.  If I saw you on the street, I'd definitely think "Wow, model" -- but your portfolio is terribly depressing and just makes me go "WTF?".  Work with better photographers who have better concepts for you and work on your expressions!

I agree with you that many of us who specialize in art modelling don't fall into the "model" look that a lot of people think of when you say the word "model."

What's really interesting is that when I was in my teens, 20's, early 30's and 5'8" at 110 pounds or less with long below the shoulder hair, people constantly asked me if I was a model, and suggested I should be one when I told them that I was not.

After I did work up the courage to model at age 35, I have been recognized as an art model quite a few times by people who have seen the photos or artwork I modelled for.  I find it even more interesting that every single one of the people who recognized me was a middle aged woman and it almost always happens in stores while shopping, or while trying on clothes.  And now I don't think I look like a model, I look like someone's grandmother, but they always comment on my figure and my hair.
