Helo there,

My name is Dzu (but please call me Chester for the sake of easiness). I'm a amateur photographer from Vietnam (you may have known what and where Vietnam is... American War is what its famous for, but i hope its not what to remember for in future...)
I shoot for hobbies only, and always what to create something different.
Normally, many photographers i know in my place, they prefer bright, colorful photos with a certain level of contrast, more of a wedding type of pictures (bright color).
But i dont. So, i'm so influenced by what people shoot on 35photo.ru, and i learn from MM a lot.
To make this short, i like dark colored images. It's colored, but i think it's dark colored, there is a lot of "black" values in the images, to be, they are hell of attractiveness. the photos look a bit desaturated, yet dreamy and strong.
I looked at a lot of photos, and now i'm trying to find them just for your references, but i failed, that's why i tried to explained by words.
You guys could take a look at the links below, and i hope you guys understand my points. Here are they:

I dont want to ask how to achieve this kind of tone specificly, what i want to know is what kind of adjustment... blending...techniques could be used to achieve this look, and then i'll play with myself with my photos.

Thank you so much

hi Chester, (Dzu) welcome to MM,

there are several ways to get those kinds of looks, but like many things,
depends were you start. If you shoot RAW, a good place to start is the
HSL tab. The colors and saturation can be tuned the way you like it and
save that as a preset, or in Photoshop you can use a hue/sat, selective
color or curves adjustment layer and save the layer settings to apply to
any image, then fine tune as needed.

Hi Ledo, thank you for quick response.
I've self-learnt Photoshop for a while and also tried different adjustments but still something were missing.
i shoot RAW, all the time and i'll try with the HSL tab.
But i think there must be something "similar" or some methods using the same that "something" to create these kind of photos.
for example, maybe first we can desaturate the images to a certain level, then mix them with maybe another tint color or fill color with a certain kinds of blending mode ....
Maybe i have to try to understand more about color theories and stuff...

Emily Soto sells her PS fashion actions.....there is a small vid on her page (link see flickr) where you can have a look how she does it...maybe it puts you somewhere in the right direction?

Bought several of Soto's actions- useless. A few overlays to create flare that you have to create and the main one, a selective color that you have to tweak. I've never gotten her look using her own actions. Such a waste of money.

Which? You're joking right?

Some are low contrast and low saturation

Some are high in color contrast (split tone) and low on contrast

Some are high in color contrast (split tone) and high in contrast

If you think all of those are the same TONE you have bigger issues smile

It seems like you're simply after a generally dark color palette. My suggestion would be simply to experiment with darkening your colors and overall mood (lighting, etc). Play with your contrast and overall curve adjustments towards the darker side. Eventually you'll find what you're looking for. Maybe stay away from vibrant colors, and keep towards cooler shades to begin with?

Here's an example that I created a while back that I think maybe fits in with your general idea:

Hope this helps somewhat

Headshot! I think i'm color blind. I gotta learn again. To be honest, i just can say they are...dark tone images, even high contrast in color, they still look...dark to my eyes, and i like that.
Im also lack of knowledge of color, just as you said...high in color contrast means split tone, well, i have no ideas what they are..so....

True! That's why i'm posing this thread and learn how to see and mix colors together. Actions cant help you out with this.
