Absolutely a scam, Kelly. Anyone that wants to send you more money than the job pays, wants you to take your share and pay others is a scam. Please review the excellent info that MM has provided on scams.

Yes, this is a very common scam.  The names change but the scam is always the same.

The check will turn out to be forged and your bank will charge your account for the full amount.  This is a very old scam predating the internet.

ETA:  Why would a company trust you, an internet stranger, with a large amount of real money?  Also, no reputable accounting firm would approve of business being done this way.

I know this is kind of an old thread, but today I got a text that said:

"Hi,I'm John, saw your profile online. We need a Makeup artist for a fashion shoot.Pay is $120/hr.Email work samples to [email protected] for details"

It came from (424) 900-3136. I am so glad I found this thread, because even though its not the same exact message that people talked about in this thread, I am guessing it's the same scam.

Just curious how that works since the scammers are not affiliated in any way with the companies of the names they use.

Any such contacts, emails, letters... Should be turned over to your local FBI office. They can't do anything about it if they don't know about it. We even have a local office here in the middle of nowhere.

ALWAYS the red flag:  They will send you a check and you have to forward your own check to one of their people.

Even worse, is that you give them your bank routing number for them to "deposit" your advance.  They instead clean out your account.

Ha ha Ha.   These guys are probably in Nigeria or Russia.

They probably deleted your e-mail without reading it.

And, they probably aren't wetting their knickers because of your e-mail.

But, it is good for folks to pass around the heads up about these scammers.

Ladies and Gentleman,

Well I just got the same scam emailed to me, be aware that the name he is using has been changed to Chris Davenport! My favorite part is the note at the bottom telling me that I am FORBIDDEN from talking about the shoot until after it has been announced publicly by the "fashion designer : Lloyd Klein". Are they serious with this garbage? Car Wraps, Mystery Shoppers and now Fashion Designers??? Do these people NEVER STOP??? Being desperate and being stupid are no longer synonymous as long as we a re all willing to talk to each other about it! The organizations name is Special Touch Media House, and their email is [email protected] - again really? An outlook account? Along with that there is NO phone number to contact them at all. It is just so sad that they are able too hook some people like this and really hurt them badly, clearly these people have no conscience at all! They will get what is coming to them eventually. We all just have to remain informed and vigilant!!

Thank you and be safe!

Glad the folks posting here were wise to this scam.  Here's a true story showing the dark side of this type of scam:

My wife, now a retired teacher, had an aide who fell for a scam like that.  The woman deposited a $5,000 check she received by overnight courier, then turned around and forwarded a $4,000 check of her own to the address requested by the scammer.  Of course the check they sent her bounced.

As a teacher's aide making slightly more than the minimum wage, her checking account had less than a $1,000 in it before she received the scammer's check.  Which meant that the check she sent them bounced and they received nothing for their efforts.

But, the bank contacted local authorities.  She was prosecuted for bank fraud and went to jail for two years.  She is now a convicted felon and cannot work as a teacher's aide any more.

The authorities never bothered to go after the folks who scammed her.  Said she should have known better.

This never happened. Come on ppl,  really? You get scammed and therefore you go to jail? Get real...
