How do you feel about this? I've heard a lot of people stray away from it due to it scaring off certain clients. How do you feel about it? Do you have nude work in your retouching portfolio? Or if you're a model/photographer/MUA/etc looking for a retoucher, would nude work in a retoucher's portfolio bother you at all?

I think it all depends on you, if you're willing to work on nudes or not, it may scare off clients or it could bring you other clients that are looking for nudes... I think that it doesn't hurt to have some nudes since it shows you're not limiting yourself to anything.

I completely agree, thanks for the input. I think I'm going to start doing a few nudes for my portfolio and put them in a separate folder.

I think in general, one (photographers, models, retouchers, stylists, artists) has to be really conscious of the degree and style of nudity that is included in a portfolio - particularly if one is going after commercial work.

Most? Why do you feel that way? I think it may scare away some but why most?

Most models who dont shoot nudes will view you negatively
Most commercial clients wont tolerate that kind of work in your port
Depends what your main client base is ?
Keep in mind what you talk about putting in your port is not allowed to be shown in most mainstream American media

Most importantly, it depends on your client base. I shoot nudes so it wouldn't bother me. I want to see how the retoucher matches the model's body to her face. This can be accomplished with nude or swimsuit shots.

As a model who is mainly interested in nude work, if I were seeking the services of a retoucher, I would not even consider  one that didn't have several strong examples of retouching nudes in their portfolio.

100% depends on your client base. Even if a photographer isn't looking for nudes to be retouched, if they have shot nude models before then they aren't going to care.

Also some people just don't care in general. I have had commissions from clients that, while I can 100% do, are incredibly out of character from what I show in my port. So I stopped being afraid of scaring people away.

Your port. should reach out to the people you want to work with.

This would be a good argument for maintaining two books.

nudity has its part in art since man came out of the cave or even before that. Just make sure it's tasteful and it's art and not porn. When in doubt ask someone who was born in more prudent times - grandma for example ;-)

If you are looking for wide range of clients avoid anything controversial:
- strong nudity
- strong religious stuff
- anti religious stuff
- violence

in portfolio move nudes as far as you can from photos of children and animals. I for once have nothing against nudity and nothing against pictures of cute babies but if I see those two kinds of work in proximity I find it really disgusting and I know for a fact that I am not the only one. I know a photographer that has two websites: one for weddings and other for more artistic stuff and as far as I know he is doing just fine. Do not put nude photos of people that look too young - girls under 21 tends to look like children for clients that are hmm... more mature. And if not in Europe remember to put warning of mature content.

Why would commercial client not tolerate art? It's barbaric. There is nudity in almost every museum and in half churches in the world and I don't see people tearing them down.
Ok I understand that clients don't wanna be associated with someone that do porn but art is not porn!

It would not bother me in the slightest. But I always felt to be my own minority.

In the US most people see any nudity as porn regardless if artistic or not
Example: I spent night in hospital few days ago with a relative
MM is blocked on the hospitals wifi network due to nudity
The US Atty gen during the Bush admin had statue covered because it had boobs
Europe is more enlightened from what I understand

Seems you can list you do it. If you don't do it exclusively, you might want to keep it out of your portfolio. Depends on where most of your work comes from.

It probably depends on the images you consider using. I find it difficult to work with a lot of skin. If you can even out subjects' skin tones well and make them look really good, and the images are stylish and creative, then I'd guess it's fine to use one or two. You don't have to use nude photos to show that, but if it's what you have then use it.
