Hello there!

I am planning on hosting a 'Pin-Up Marathon' for some ladies in my town. I intend to hire a make-up artist that would be able to do make-up and hair for the ladies. I have never hosted a marathon before and I was curious what would be a fair wage to pay my MUA.

I would be photographing about 5 women a day. I have never paid a make-up artist before, we've always just done tfp work.
But this would be a busy work day and I would love to pay for her services. I want to offer her something but I can't even think of a fair ballpark figure.

what would be fair? smile

Professional makeup artists are not paid by the "look" but have half day and full day rates. Just ask the makeup artist what their rate is. Standard rates will vary depending on the area and the artist's experience, so asking others what they would pay or charge is irrelevant.

What to pay MUA...

Stacey if you were shooting a commercial gig this would be a pass through expense... and likely based on the budget for the project...

That said for your scenario it would ideally be a percentage of the aggregate fee... which you agree upon...
There is no way anyone can quote numbers for your market other than ACTUAL players in your market...
Anyone not working the Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada market and giving out number is pure BS...

Here is a starting point in case you want to canvass local talent...
http://www.beautysalonfortmcmurray.com/

Call them... btw, in 10 seconds I found a half dozen other salons in town that you might query...
The Beauty industry is highly competitive... and those who can't deliver are quickly history...
And then there is the issue of licensing.... You need to verify you're in compliance with local regs here...

Additionally Stacey is your place of business in compliance with local zoning/land use regs?
Working out of a home studio commercially may or may not be in harmony with the aforementioned...

There are more than a few states in the US require a license for hair and makeup for hire...
And then there is an issue of liability... what if your stylist burns a client with his/her hot tools...
yes sadly it happens...

You do have professional liability insurance, correct?

Dani B is spot on... day or half day rate is an industry standard for commercial work...
Only bridal might be by client head count...

MUA's have established rates. Most are in the $300.-$400. range, as a day rate, if they are really good at what they do.

Thanks for the advise!

We've been chatting and I feel that the rate she is offering is more than fair. She's great at what she does and is quite experienced with mobile set-ups.
They're are a lot of salons and artist in my town, but unfortunately not many that are reliable or experienced.
