I doubt there's enough power in standby mode just to run the camera and I think you are being too paranoid....... Citation please.

You could block the sites and IPs listed in the Kaspersky research in your router firewall. The router will then block comms to the listed sites.
Unless the drive makers release a diagnostic tool to either examine the drive for tampering or overwrite any supposed empty space in the ROM to salvage their corporate reputations there is not much else you can do.

As for the Lenovo / Superfish thing - a "compromised" security certificate is installed into the system - this should be removed asap. Lenovo has instructions after the customer backlash.

I'm the proper authority, or one of them, anyway. And I'm due quite a few apologies.

Chuckles. Don't hold your breath. I spent 25 years banging my head against a brick wall. Executives have a way of getting what they want even when you can show them it's a really freaking dumb idea. Apologize? Hah!  If/when it blows up in their face, they just claim they weren't told and then proceed to blame the IT or Security people (usually both). In extreme cases they simply switch agencies because, well, it's hard to hit a moving target. tongue

But an apology? ROTFLMFFAO! Never gonna happen.
