Parents want Star Wars figures banned
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYKbNMrnExo Star Wars has been around for just over 30 years... Why take these off the shelves now? Jul 16 15 07:50 am Link While I agree with his underlying point, his argument is poorly structured, poorly supported, and the constant cursing gets in the way of his making a valid point. Basically, an unstructured rant. He isn't half as witty, or bright, as he seems to think he is. Even the original "news" report about this leaps from "I wouldn't buy this for my 4 year old," to "Parents are FURIOUS!!!1one" Jul 16 15 08:38 am Link So...I take it they've never seen any barbie doll, ever? Sounds like the dad is missing the context from the movie. It's part of the scene. Pretty obvious what the dad is into (BDSM/whips/chains) in the bedroom! that's likely what he's blushing about .. thinking it is what the toy is referencing Jul 16 15 08:50 am Link I mean.. without context.. the father isn't wrong. Why a doll in a bikini with a collar and chain around her neck. Outside of the context of star wars.. yeah.. it's a bit out there for a child of any age. But in context? it makes sense. If he knows the context and doesn't understand that he can say to his daughters: "This is representing a character in a very popular movie that children 30 years ago really enjoyed.. maybe we can watch the movies together and learn about what this toy is all about" then he's got a problem. But if he's just ignorant of star wars -- and there's no reason to think that the father of a 4 year old child knows about or even cares about star wars -- then it is what it is. He could certainly stand to try to *learn* about the context but it's not like he's pulling all the toys off the shelves and burning them in the parking lot. He expressed his displeasure at the imagery presented and that's that. Jul 16 15 08:55 am Link I find it hard to believe that the father has never seen Return of the Jedi and has no idea what the "slave Leia" figure is all about. Or what she eventually does with that chain. Jul 16 15 09:09 am Link DHayes Photography wrote: *shrug* The story doesn't say how old his kids are but it says the toy is labeled for 4 years and up. A father of a 4 year old could be in his early 20s. I guarantee there are 25 year olds out in the wide world of the USA who haven't seen Return of the Jedi or know very much about it. Jul 16 15 09:43 am Link Someone wants to ban an action figure of Carrie Fisher in the classic slave girl outfit from Return of the Jedi? Okay, the world has certainly gone to shit in a dirty commode now. Jul 16 15 09:50 am Link It's fun to hear the easily offended talk about the easily offended.
