I will presume that you know about the movie by Mel Gibson and will presume that you've seen it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hacksaw_Ridge

Some of the aspects of the movie that baffle me:
* how did the Americans get the netting up that steep wall to start with? but even more baffling
* since the Japanese who held the ridge had the ridge all to themselves, why didn't they cut the netting down when they could to prevent the US troops from returning? It appeared to be just rope, so something they could do easily.  Even more dastardly, they could have rigged it so that it was loaded with US soldiers, then release it so that scores of troops would fall far below. The Japanese didn't fear, they weren't foolish, why didn't they?

I'm no military expert but maybe someone can educate me.

There is no explanation for the first question BUT that said there were rocket grapnels in use in WW2 at least in Normandy. So it is possible that such a thing was used along with block and tackle:

As to the second point the Japanese did not actually occupy the edge of the ridge but were emplaced back further from there. If they were in the open they would have been subject to ready air attack. There was apparently something of a relatively flat and relatively cover free "no man's land" between the edge of the escarpment and the Japanese emplacements.

EDIT

ANSWER: How the nets were hung on the cliff face.

Three men volunteered to climb to the top of the ridge and hang the nets. Doss was one of the three: Here is an actual picture of him on the top with the nets, alongside a still from the film. So the answer is that the work of hanging the nets was done manually.

It is also worth noting that the nets in reality would not have been nearly as long as those used in the film

Good and obvious question but one without an obvious answer in the movie. I looked but couldn't find out if those nets were of some standardised size or sizes as used by the US Navy in WW2. So the actual answer to how long they were remains a bit of a mystery.

I was able to reference a copy of the US Army Field Manual [FM 21-22 Watermanship 1944] that instructs on how to climb them but the only reference to their length is that in some cases with some ships, but not all, when hung over the side of the ship they are not long enough to reach the water.

Mel Gibson is a bigoted ass.
Also a mediocre actor, so I save time by NOT watching any of his movies.

Noticed some SIMILARITIES between Doss and Carson so I'm going to explore them here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmond_Doss
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Carson

Male--Both men https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Male

American--Both US Citizens https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americans

SDA--They are both Seventh-day Adventists https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh-d … ist_Church
["Seventh-Day Adventist" in the  Desmond Doss Wikipedia page should be "Seventh-day Adventist"]

Medical--both value life and saved many as medic (Doss) and doctor (Carson).

Military--WWII (Doss) and JROTC (Carson).

POTUS--They have both met at least one POTUS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President … ted_States
           Doss: Truman awarded medal.
           Carson: Clinton prayer breakfast.
                         Obama prayer breakfast.
Bush presented award. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_P … recipients

Highest honor--They both received the US's highest military and civilian honor, respectively:
     (Congressional) Medal of Honor: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medal_of_Honor
     Presidential Medal of Freedom:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President … of_Freedom  *

Many other awards, decorations, recognitions: medals for Doss, honorary doctorates for Carson, etc.

Married F--both married a woman/women, (Doss--2, Carson 1) [BTW, Doss; marriages were sequential not concurrent! ;-)]

Child(ren)--1 and 3 (Doss, Carson) I think they're all sons!

Contemporaries. 1951 when Carson was born to 2006 when Doss died--they were concurrently alive one the same planet about 55 years.

Georgia--both lived in the state at one time.

Met?--don't know if they ever met.  My guess is that more likely than not they would have. [Queries placed to couple well-placed sources.]

Book(s)--have either been written about them or by them.

Movie(s) have been made about them.

WIP: ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| estimate 95+% complete. Hold. I think I'm done. Tired.

* Took a break to see if any MMers had won this honor. Not so far that I know, but why not?

"Doss was drafted"?  Didn't he say in movie that he volunteered? Wasn't he exempt from draft due to work building warships?
