How to copy a photographic style?

I get this question a lot. Most of the time people think it's mostly related to retouching. But there are many "ingredients" to look after, especially before taking a photo.

I've browsed a few online projects today and there are a bunch of retouching requests like this: "I just want my photos to look like in Vogue". If only it were that easy...
