Models, what are you doing since you can't travel
For the large group of traveling models on Modelmayhem, what are you doing* for work/money now that you can't travel **? * I mean besides panicking. ** Yes, I know you can still travel if you drive or if you get a seat on what's left of the airline still flying routes. Mar 22 20 10:59 am Link This may not be an appropriate question to ask, as in many states it is currently illegal to accept a modeling job. I don't mean to be nasty or critical, but self incrimination is not advised. Mar 22 20 11:42 am Link Nor-Cal Photography wrote: It is an appropriate question to ask. It may not be prudent to answer if you are fearful of the modeling police reading the boards on MM and tracking you down. Perhaps this will become a more popular activity amongst working models who need to generate and/or supplement an income during tough times like this/these. Mar 24 20 12:37 am Link I'm not panicking. I, like those in many other professions and many in this one, am very aware of the concept of a savings account - and I also have one. I have been putting money in my savings account for a while. Now, while dipping into savings to pay bills is not ideal, it is better than not paying them at all. In addition, because I pay taxes, I will be filing unemployment. And there is also the stimulus check. Besides that, I am still photographing myself regularly and selling prints. I've also been in discussions to do art posing through video apps - and for photographers I know very well, I am allowing a couple of facetime shoots (this is a thing I don't entirely understand yet, but I've seen some decent results). This is only something I'm allowing with people I trust for safety and privacy reasons though. Apr 06 20 10:01 pm Link Liv Sage wrote: What she said. I'm selling artist reference photos, but using this time to work on other ways to invest in my business like my website, wardrobe, etc. Pivoting my business a bit to make some income while I wait for unemployment. I don't like dipping into my savings, but I have it Apr 07 20 10:21 am Link Don't know if this helps anyone but if you file taxes as a business there is a "loan" / grant which is available to some that does not have to be repaid. You can apply online, takes about twenty minutes to fill out the forms. Here is the overview. In response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, small business owners in all U.S. states, Washington D.C., and territories are eligible to apply for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan advance of up to $10,000. This advance will provide economic relief to businesses that are currently experiencing a temporary loss of revenue. Funds will be made available following a successful application. This loan advance will not have to be repaid. Here is the link. https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/lo … cy-advance I would think most traveling models would be considered independent business owners. There is no requirement that you have employees. Photographers would also seem to fit unless like me you are only doing it for fun. It costs nothing to apply and could be ten grand in the bank to help you get through this ordeal. You are such a talented model and photographer, and such a wonderful source of inspiration! Apr 10 20 05:32 am Link A few models I know are still making money from their OnlyFans and Patreon sites. Some do quite well marketing their own sites. It should be an inspiration to others to prepare for a rainy day. Whether a pandemic, broken bones, ankle bracelet (house arrest), or needing to care for a love one, not all traveling models can travel all the time. This revenue source should not be dismissed too quickly. While I freely allow models to use our images as they see fit, I know not every photographer agrees. Communicate and negotiate the best deal you can. Charge one rate for photographers who wish to have the exclusive use, and lower your rates to those sessions that you think you might use for your subscription site(s). It takes a bit to start your site and get it promoted to the right fans. I recommend using this downtime to be productive. Apr 10 20 05:41 pm Link IMAGINERIES wrote: Thank you - I appreciate it! Apr 12 20 08:13 am Link In the last week, I have seen people posting new travel notices planning to go into communities with shelter-in-place restrictions in the very near future. I have been seeing a photographer post photos on social media from shoots with traveling models they claim are from that morning. So people are still shooting in person, and I don't know what they are thinking. Apr 15 20 08:56 pm Link RVD Photography wrote: Maybe they are thinking Apr 16 20 12:39 am Link Got it. Desperate people do desperate things including breaking the law. What about the photographers that are hiring them? Apr 16 20 11:06 am Link RVD Photography wrote: The Law ? Apr 17 20 02:11 am Link I am no longer traveling, but I did for almost 10 years. When I started I had just left a job as an auto service manager and had about $1000 in my bank account. I know some models are suffering financially right now, but I think it's a myth that all traveling models are barely scraping by. If they are, then they probably either don't actually choose to work much or aren't getting re-hired by previous clients. If you are a decent model, people email you all the time asking when you are coming back to town. Many younger traveling models are full time students who have student loans to fall back on. Many have side hustles to earn extra money. There's Instagram, Patreon, fan sites, all sorts of things to earn extra money with if you are working to market yourself, in addition to other non-modeling side jobs. It's not ever a good thing to put all your eggs in one basket. I've met many models who are very smart and shrewd businesswomen and they will weather this current storm just fine. I dislike the stereotype that models are helpless and clueless when it comes to their business. When I traveled I spent about 20 - 25 days at home and 5 - 10 days traveling each month. In those traveling days I made enough to pay all my bills, traveling expenses, taxes and put money in savings. Obviously when you aren't traveling you are still fielding emails and planning your next tour and you pick up occasional local jobs. If you can't put money away for emergencies when you're sick or break a bone, etc., then you aren't actually earning a living. You're just getting by. Personally, in the last few years I have made a good portion of my total income by buying a house, fixing it up while I live in it and selling it. This type of side hustle is something you can do while full-time modeling, because you don't need to be on the road every day. It wasn't an intentional income producer to start... I didn't have the budget to buy a pretty house. I like to clean and paint and can do a lot of repairs myself. I need both income streams in order to get where I want financially. Been said before, you can't pay the rent or buy food with TFP (or whatever).
