“If that taxi driver in Budapest hadn’t made me miss my train, I would now probably be a plastic surgeon… I missed the chance to sit for the entry test of the faculty of medicine because of him...”
Such an unpredictable life, with personal and authentic choices.
“I don’t think I am that fond of photography, not even of technique or of devices, I just like being inspired by the visual art, like the Flemish paintings”.
Indeed, the shots of Manuel Scrima are compared because of the tricks of light and shadows to the works of Dutch painters, they recreate the warm and dreaming intimacy typical of a “classical” vision of backgrounds far from western reality. They emotionally shock but the committees themselves, who later appreciate these works through a more accurate analysis.
“I remember my first pictures in Africa were taken inside of Masai huts. The subjects were portrayed with dim light, candles or oil lamps. It was stunningly impressive, outside of time. I was harshly criticised because I didn’t represented as always the huts with dark interiors, therefore because it was a “fake” reality. Only later they were considered masterpieces”.
Taking a picture means see where the other can’t see, look, observe and go beyond.
“I’m fascinated by the beauty and I try to catch its inner side in every situation, even extreme, like when I was in Africa, regarding the conditions of people dying of AIDS. They were pictures portraying all the possible beauty in features, glances, lights, far from the sufferance always represented. After all that was my vision and perhaps even my contribution to a new dignity of them”.
“I came to Africa in 2006 with a small digital camera, since all you need are eye and heart, these are my means. I have never had passion for digital devices or sophisticated lenses. I prefer way more an analogical method, true and quick shots, without the artificiality of a complex post-production. Experimentation, fantasy, imagination, this is what I would recommend as a self-taught to all the people who would like to try being a photographer”.
Eye and heart, alongside a remarkable determination in order to leave a career in the making and start off with an invitation of a famous charitable association, with few means but a great passion. “I wanted to take pictures, expose myself with spontaneity and no troubles, with a direct sight on a reality which was still unknown and far away. I lived in Africa till 2009 and it was in Nairobi, in July, the same year, that I got my consecration at RaMoMa, the national museum of modern art, with my personal exposition “Africa Awakes”. However, my greatest satisfaction amongst all the exhibition I held in such a short period of time and in so many countries, was when I became naturalised citizen of Kenia during the Kenia Week at UNESCO’s palace in Paris in 2010”.

“Probabilmente se quel taxista a Budapest mi avesse fatto prendere in tempo il treno, ora sarei chirurgo estetico…persi così la possibilità di partecipare al test di ammissione alla facoltà di medicina….”.
Una vita imprevedibile, dalle scelte molto personali ed autentiche.
“Non mi considero un vero appassionato di fotografia, né tantomeno di tecnica o di apparecchiature fotografiche, mi piace ispirarmi all’arte visiva come i quadri fiamminghi…”
Infatti da molti gli scatti di Manuel Scrima vengono paragonati per i giochi di luce ed ombra alle opere dei maestri olandesi, ricreano quell’intimità calda e sognante propria di una visione “classica” in contesti lontani dalla realtà occidentale. Generano uno shock emotivo che spesso suscita clamore tra gli stessi committenti, per essere compreso ed apprezzato poi ad una più attenta analisi.
“..Ricordo che i primi scatti in Africa furono gli interni delle capanne Masai. Ritrassi i soggetti nel loro habitat naturale ma con una luce fioca di candele o lumi ad olio. Era incredibilmente suggestivo, senza tempo. Venni molto criticato per non avere accettato la consuetudine di capanne totalmente buie al loro interno e quindi avere “falsificato” la realtà. Solo in seguito furono definiti capolavori…”
Fotografare significa vedere dove altri non vedono, guardare, osservare…e andare oltre.
“…Mi affascina la bellezza e cerco di coglierne la natura in ogni situazione anche estrema, come, sempre in Africa, la condizione dei malati terminali di AIDS. Erano immagini che ritraevano tutta la bellezza possibile in fattezze, sguardi, luci, lontane dai patimenti di solito rappresentati. In fondo quella era la mia visione e forse anche il mio contributo ad una loro rinnovata dignità.”.
“Arrivai in Africa nel 2006 con una piccola camera digitale, occorre occhio e cuore, questi sono i miei mezzi. Non mi sono mai appassionato né al digitale né ai sofisticati obiettivi.
Preferisco senz’altro il metodo analogico, scatti veri, immediati, senza l’artifizio di una complessa post produzione. Sperimentazione, fantasia, immaginazione ecco cosa da autodidatta raccomanderei a chi vuole accostarsi alla fotografia.”
Certo!... occhio e cuore, ed anche una determinazione considerevole per lasciare una carriera avviata e partire dietro invito di una nota associazione umanitaria, con pochi mezzi e molta passione. “..volevo fotografare, espormi con spontaneità e leggerezza, con sguardo puro su una realtà a me ancora ignota ed assai lontana. Rimasi in Africa sino al 2009 e proprio a Nairobi nel Luglio di quell’anno ottenni la mia consacrazione al RaMoMa museo di arte moderna con la mostra personale “Africa Awakes”. Ma la mia soddisfazione più grande tra le tante mostre che così in poco tempo ho allestito in vari paesi, fu il riconoscimento a naturalizzato Keniota durante la Kenia Week al Palazzo dell’UNESCO a Parigi nel 2010”.
