You definitely should report this to the police as well as the moderator for model mayhem and have him removed.  You should also inform any other modeling site moderator you are a member.

There are a couple variations on this scam going around. I know it was talked about on OMP. I have gotten a couple of these things. Another one that is very similar to this is the one where they tell you it is an overseas assignment and they will send you a money order for you to cash for the plane ticket and you need to send the money back to them... then it turns out to be a stolen or "washed" check. Its very similar to the "romance" scams. i guess the thing to keep in mind is that if it sounds too good to be true it probably is

Simply tell him to fork over a cash retainer for the full amount before you are able to provide him with any information. Also as a pre-requisite, you will need all the aformentioned information about him so that you may also conduct a full criminal background check. In addition to that information you will need to know his blood type, bank account number and at least one credit card number with experiation date and those three fancy digits on the back. Oh, and don't forget to tell him to check his horrendous spelling. wink

Someone that falls for something like this will be a poor beginner, that personally worries me. On my main site I have a model safety and Top Tips section. Before anyone even makes an arrangement to see me for possible management I make them read it twice ten times if they have to and that's before they have even filled out a stat form.

May I please make a suggestion;

How about producing a model safety and advice section on MM. Prevention is always the best cure for this type of scam. New young models (Male and Female) joining any open forum will be the most vulnerable. I speak through experience harking back to my ambitious teenage modelling years when I was equally as hungry to achieve my goal.

Ok, for the experienced people that have been in the industry for a while on MM;

Shall we start making a list for the MM Modelling advice and safety page?

Warm Regards

Also, wouldn't 4,500 be an awfully large percentage of a $10,000 job like the one portrayed?

This is yet another version of the Nigerian Scam.

www.newmodels.com/Nigeria.html

There is nothing new about it.  It has been reported by someone, breathlessly, an average of once a day since the beginning of Model Mayhem.  And every single time, people act like they have never heard of it before.

Sometimes I just don't get the point of writing about these things.

Ah, a young model thinking on the same lines, good start, the most productive comment so far. Excellent Idea about a model matters forum but a solid advice and safety page will be set in stone for people to read. Infact, as part of the joining process? It may even act as a deterrent.

Now that you have worked up a perfectly good snit . . . .

Suppose he had put up a site with "his work" on it.  Would you have believed him then?  Sometimes these scammers do just that.

There is no point in reporting him to Ujena.  He has nothing to do with Ujena, they have nothing to do with him, and they have no control over him.  Reporting him wastes your time and Ujena's.

There is no point in reporting him to the police.  What police?  He's in Nigeria, and the police there aren't going to do a damned thing about it.

Just learn about the industry, know when to spot obvious scams, and move on.

Sounds to me like it is pretty easy to make a living in Nigeria.  Just set up a scam and invite the police chief over for a cup of java!

Yes, id be cheesed off repeating myself also. So the idea of setting up an advice page is starting to look like a good idea. I'm not just talking about the obvious Nigerian Scams but also the pitfalls of the modelling industry as a whole. A  guideline would be a welcomed feature I'm sure on MM

Anyone who reads that whole site, and makes an effort to understand it, would instantly recognize 98% of all the scams that are out there.  Three of the lengthy articles are specifically devoted to scams (and "scambuster" advice); the remainder describe how the industry really works, so if you get an offer that is completely inconsistent with the way business is done, you know it's not real.

What I find scary is people who say they rely on "notices" like this on the forum to find out about individual scams.  That's not the way to do it.  There are too many.  The only real defense is to understand the industry.

Reguardless if he gave me his work or not, I still know how to spot it when i see it... I'll tell u honestly, I have done jobs where I have gotten paid a pretty penny but thats not the point... The fact that he put that he needs your FULL NAME... which is a no-no... and your mothers MAIDEN NAME which is a BIG no-no because if they get that, then they have your security password... The whole point of the thread is just to look out for everyone, nothing more.

Plus they dont just have to be in Nigeria, it could stem from there... they could be anywhere, they could live nextdoor to me and go through my mail, u never know... these people are leeches, they're all over everything

You want to know where it's from?  Post the header record from the email.  That will tell us whether or not it's in the US.

Here's an example, which I got from a Nigerian Scammer.  The IP address is for an ISP in Spain, although the scammer claimed to be writing from Scotland Yard in the UK:

Yeah, I've gotten the same e-mail from someone claiming a different name (Robert Barts), a while back. I sent him a couple of messages asking for references, etc., as I already knew it was a scam, but wanted to mess with him a while. I even told him that the only way I could work with him is if he sent the money to my lawyer through certified US money order, because my bank burned down...

In the end, I ended up sending a message letting them know that I knew it was a nigerian scam, and that they had been "found out" by quite a few people. Needless to say, I never got a response!

Just never give these people any information that you know they could use against you for anything. You don't want to end up a few thousand dollars in debt like I've heard of happening to some people.

It's sad to think that some people are actually gullible enough to fall for this crap.

This is truly sad, that people go after folks like this or in any manner, is just a bleak look at the lowest common denominator of humans, and what some folks will stoop to.

Luckily, I just got emails that I have been lucky enough to win a Dutch Lottery, they have just had trouble getting a hold of me.  Thank god they did, cuz now I can just leave it all behind and go collect my millions, as I seemingly have won this and several other lotteries in the Netherlands.

Thank god I dont have to worry about these predator types anymore..I AM RICH.

But you guys be careful.......

I was contacted by Stewart design (Profile #1207371) the same day I signed up for MM. The sequence of emails was the same, with very few different details (the name of the client was Marie Thomas this time.)

Anyway, upon replying, same story. No contact information, no websites, asking for personal information, never writing to me, always "Hello Mate".

The email was from John Stewart - [email protected].

Their MM profile has been deleted already. Keep an eye opened...

These scams work because they appeal to the model's greed.  Anyone with common sense would realize that the money being offered was too good to be true.  But the model sees the $$$$ signs and common sense goes out the door.  I get scam emails too -- everyone does -- but I don't respond.
