Hey!

I'm a newbie model from Denver, Colorado. I was recently accepted as a SuicideGirl (yay) and had my first set shot yesterday, it went awesome (doubleyay). Now comes the waiting game to see if the set gets accepted.

Anyway, the make-up artist who worked on me told me about this site and so far I am incredibly impressed! But I am quickly realizing I have no idea what the hell I am doing when it comes to modeling, so I need experience. And tips.

I want to make friends on here too... photography is such a beautiful medium in art, no?

My first word of advice to you is avoid Suicide Girls like the plague they are. Did you read the contract carefully? Are you aware that you signed a non-compete clause so now you're basically owned by Suicide Girls for two years? If you haven't signed anything don't. Run away and don't look back. Suicide Girls is very exploitive of anyone who works for them. There are a lot of threads on Model Mayhem about this very thing. I would highly encourage you to go to the search feature (located on the bottom of the forums page) and do a search for Suicide Girls. Read the threads and decide if shooting for them is really worth it. Personally, I would never shoot a set for Suicide Girls; they are wrong on so many levels.

Having said that, welcome to Model Mayhem!

welcome!!!
have fun here and you'll learn and grow as a model.

BUT
RUN from SG. don't get caught up in that mess.
it is NOT worth it.
plenty of other great sites that i'm sure would love to have you and won't strangle you with such a horrible contract.

No offense, but be careful...Suicide Girls is terrible. Read between the lines when you sign anything. I know way too many people that got screwed over because of them.

I noticed that you haven't sent in the photos yet -- I think that's good. Don't send them in, and whatever you do don't sign their highly exploitive contract. Its not worth it. You will be exclusive to them for two years and there is absolutely no guarantee you will work with them ever again. So, you won't be able to model for alternative sites until the SG contact is up. Its a great way to not get money or exposure. And the reality of the situation is no-one cares if you're a Suicide Girl; its not something that will impress anyone if you include it on your resume.

The other sucky thing about SG is how they treat the photographers. The contract the photographer signs gives all copyright of the images to SG for extremely little pay. This is very exploitive and it is extremely bad for the photography business in general. Your photographer shouldn't sell these images to them either -- no good will come of it and no good exposure will come of it either.

And... It gets even better. They will eventually sell these images to other porn sites; they will not remain exclusively on the SG website. And there's no way you can tell where they will pop up and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it (because they own all copyrights).

Again, do a forum search and read what others have said about SG. Be informed.

I appreciate all advice on SG, but before approaching it I researched SG THOROUGHLY. I am aware of the contractual obligations, and I think it's wise of them. I can't model for competing sites for two years, which is fine, but I AM allowed to do other modeling. I don't have a problem with "being owned" by SG, I like the community, and I am an artist and writer first and foremost... I can use any SG notoriety to promote my other work.

You are right about photographers however. I was disappointed to find out they too have to sign a contract prohibiting them to shoot for competing sites for two years, and the pay is only $100, $200 if the photographer edits them. However, to add SG photos to one's portfolio is a nice perk, and certainly sounds impressive.

Regardless, I'll go read up on the forums as you advised, although my mind is made up and "the deal is sealed," if you will.

I'd sue too if I were them.

They came up with an original concept and now everyone else is COPYING them. I HATE IT when people copy me.

Lithium Picnic broke his contract. He did! I love him, but hey - he made a boo-boo.

I'll let everyone else beat you over the head regarding SG, all I wanna say is that I love your face!!
None of your pics show any body so I can't comment on that.
How many tats do you have?

If you are willing to stop your modeling opportunities for two years (right as you are beginning to get into it), then going with SG won't hurt you. As to not modeling for their competitors: that's so vague, it's not even defined.

Congratulations on being wanted, but other people/companies will want you as well. And they might give you a much better deal.

Take your time on this decision and I wish you the best of luck,

Fine, I'll retract my statement (I don't want to hurt any feelings).... You are obviously showing that you haven't done all the research by your posts.

You keep saying that SG will be such a good thing, when in reality, it does more harm than good.

Also, if you knew all the facts with Lithium, you would know that the SG lawsuit is complete bunk... But, they will go after him because he's the little guy. It's what they do.

In SG you don't have much of a choice when it comes down to which photographer you want so you might end up with a crappy one. poo.

I think Lithium Picnic has some of the best images and then when he tries to do his own thing, he gets a lawsuit >_

In actuality, photographers will be running th other way...as their photos can be used without their permission, depending on the contract she signed, as some SG contracts claim rights to her "likeness".

I think a lot of girls see it as a big career boost, when the reality is, SG is not picky about who they ask to join and nowadays, the SG stigma will do more harm than good. Photographers won't want to touch you with a 10 foot pole.

I won't shoot anything for SG. The pay is a joke, the terms are -very- one sided, and the risk of legal headaches not worth it to me. Better to shoot for one of the other sites like GodsGirls. Their sets seem more artistic and less porn IMO, and it looks like they accept more sets per girl. No idea on how well they pay though or what their paperwork's like.

Good luck though.

I have to say I love Lithium Picnic. And I probably am not supposed to say this, but getting a lawsuit for shoting pictures of his own wife?? I guess that's all I'll say about that. I really wish them the best of luck and I love his photos.

As far as Alt girl erotica, Blue Blood was doing it long before SG.

How are you so sure that Lithium Picnic broke his contract?  As far as I know this case has not yet been resolved in court.

First of all, thank you Dean for the compliment. I think my face is, well, interesting.

It's okay that I was mocked, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about and deserve it. But, as a recently accepted SuicideGirl who is currently immersed in all of the legalities and such surrounding SuicideGirls, I understand these things:
1.) The photographer contract states that the photographer cannot shoot for competing sites (which is clear in that it cannot be a PAY site for models or for "alternative" models).
2.) www.apneatic.com is a pay site, not to mention a fierce competitor for SG. Apnea is no longer a SuicideGirl. However, Lithium Picnic was still a staff photographer for SG.
3.) Lithium Picnic shot for said pay site, despite being under a SG contract.
4.) SG sued him for breach of contract. Which he did.

Am I wrong in any of this? If so, laugh away, I'm dumb then. But please send me a message or reply to let me know HOW I'm wrong so I don't keep saying this and looking like an idiot.

As far as SG being an original concept, I can't say that with certainty (although I believe it is), but they were the first site that did what they did and brought it into the mainstream beautifully.

Oh, and you can hire your own photographer for SG. You don't have to use theirs. That's what I did. SG pays them and they have to sign a contract as well.

Bottom line: let's equate all these "cool alternative chick" pay sites to adult magazines. SuicideGirls is Playboy. Deviant Nation, and other subculture and counterculture sites are "Hustler," "Penthouse," "Juggs," etc. Now which would you rather be a part of? Despite my adoration of Larry Flynt, I'd go with Playboy.

It's funny that all my SG stuff isn't even official and I'm having to already defend SG and my decision to be a SuicideGirl. Geez. I guess I better get used to it.

The contract also states that the contract doesn't apply to "single girl" sites.... which Apneas is.

So, like I said before, the lawsuit is bunk.

Also, good luck finding photographers who will shoot you after everything is finalized. Unless they already work with them, photographers will avoid SG like the plague.

I thought that point # 1 was in dispute - that they did not have that contract when LP started working for them and he never signed it after they did create the photographer contract.  There was a good interview online that talked about this - I'm trying o find the link now.
