ALL magazines are formulaic. Just depends on the formula. Penthouse was always more exciting and daring, and broke a lot of controversial stories too.

I'm guessing that all print media is in trouble.  Look at PC Magazine -- it's going on-line only in a few months.  I've got two magazines that I receive for free (including one of the mags in the thread subject line) -- I had subscriptions several years ago, and I let them lapse, but I guess it was more important that those rags keep their subscription numbers up.

In any case, be prepared for more & more magazines to stop printing.  (What will I read in the bathroom when that happens?  I don't want to put a PC in the bathroom!)

Another point:  if a model appears in either one of those magazines -- I'm guessing that 95% of all future requests for work will involve nude modeling.

btw the way whats the real difference in career impacts by appearing in either one?

ill have to see the new penthouse with the new look, normaly they are both filled with plastic pictures that say nothing about the model and is probaly the lowest form of photography, soft core porn never floated my boat

Penthouse is fine if you want a stepping stone into shooting porn. It's actually great for that. Most their centerfolds do well in porn careers, even with certain restrictions (most only do girl/girl, until nothing sells anymore and they'll switch to boy/girl).

Penthouse as a stepping stone to a modeling career? No.

Playboy is much more prestigious. In my experience at least, one has to actually "try" to be in Playboy while in Penthouse you just kind of raise your hand to indicate interest and they jump on you... and then if you change your mind, message you every few months to see if your mind is still changed...

but that's just me.

Lisa, I looked at your photos. Normally for Playboy it's models that would otherwise not consider doing nudes at all. With how Penthouse is now soft-core, I don't know...

It all depends what you want to do with your career...

Its just pedestrian, north american puritanical arrogance.

IIIIIIIIII wont get nekkid unless its for THIS magazine.

Yet every friggin model in Europe is naked because ITS JUST NOT A FUCKING BIG DEAL.

ARGH.

The best part of these people is when they actually DO get naked for playboy and then get the paycheck.  Thats the best laugh ever.  Is there anyone that pays less than playboy?  haha.

Neither Jaime or Erica were Playmates, they were told they would never become Playmates so Penthouse took them. Penthouse takes all the Playboy models that don't become Playmates.
One of those models had some VERY choice words for Penthouse before she quit her stint with them altogether...

If you want to get naked for money, there are better avenues than PB. If you want the experience... which I would guess is 95% of PB models, there is no one better. Most the girls are not full time models, they are students, full-time workers, moms, college graduates. They do their stint with PB and that's it, move on with their lives. There are VERY few Pam Anderson, Anna Nicole, Jenny McCarthy types.

Playboy was considered smut by millions of Americans in nineteen fifty whatever when it first came out.  Fortunately for Playby, Penthouse and Hustler came out later and by sheer, gross raunchiness made Playboy look relatively mild.  So then Playboy grew to become the "OK," all-American magazine that, now, many parents would not mind their daughters appearing nude in.

I see - and drinking beer leads to heroin addiction.  TOTALLY ILLOGICAL.

There are MANY MANY girls who have appeared in Playboy who have gone on to shooting hardcore XXX video.

And by the way - NOT anyone can appear in Penthouse.  Penthouse features some of the most gorgeous women on the face of this planet.  Please write about something you actually know about, rather than inflicting your fantasies upon the rest of us.

I think models for Playboy enjoy a little more respect than models who have been in Penthouse based on comments I have heard over the years.

As a side, Playboy's quality has turned into a rag under Hefner's daughter's reign. The color of the pages of today's magazine is atrocious when compared to the 70's or 80's - so it will get to a point where Playboy will not be any more favored than Penthouse.

just my two cents

I think also the fact that no one shoots Kodachrome any longer also contributes to the ugly color.

Playboy models are now being asked to show more of the "tonsils" (wink wink nudge nudge) - especially on the website.  It will get to a point in the future when they will do "pink" - just like any other porn magazine (except, of course, with their ultra-cookiecutter formulaic lighting).

Personally I think Playboy's photography is rather cliche. The poses seem so predictable. The lighting for the most part is very unnatural. I have read articles about the photographers using up to 16 lights for one model/one pose!

Gone are the old days when Playboy had natural models in very real poses. The true girl next door style is not part of Playboy anymore. So I don't see the fascination with Playboy over Penthouse or anyone else. They all are hollow shells of what they used to be.

Sorry but it always kills me to hear people discussing Playboy et. al. in terms of artistic merit.

Since the 1950's, Playboy has existed for one reason: the generation of advertising dollars.

Penthouse is no different.

Formulaic? You bet! The formula has zip to do with art, class or style. It has to do with what will appeal to the largest number of young men with the largest average disposable income.

Penthouse all over the map stylistically? Can you say "Playing catch up" kiddies? Why would it be a big surprise that the also ran would be casting about trying to find  a better formula?

The problem for all of them it seems is that paper has become passe. New venues ... hardcore works better online? Mebby.

You are conveniently leaving out the correlation between advertising dolllar$ and circulation.  How does a magazine increase it's circulation?  By having people BUY copies of it.  And obviously - nobody buys Playboy or Penthouse for the articles.

So you are WRONG.

And Penthouse was having trouble because of bad management, not because of the "artistic merit" of the images on its pages.  Playboy is having trouble not only because of the Recession, but because it is facing competition from other "spank bank fillers".  So - what is Playboy doing?  It is asking the girls to show more of their "tonsils" - especially on the website . . . and so it is headed in the direction of becoming another "pink"-centric magazine.

Penthouse is once again "open leg" and hopefully heading back to its glory days of taking chances with erotic art - the very thing that set it apart from the McPorn of Playboy.

Playboy has a long established following of fans that few others will ever touch.  The main thing is Playboy has helped to launch a lot of people that would not have had the chance other wise to do anything at all.    Granted some may think this type-cast the model but a few have managed to get around that aspect as well.  Playboy is still the classier of all Men's Magazines out there regardless of what a few who disapprove of the magazine may think.
Its certainly not for everybody and one should always think about the long term before posing yet I believe those who choose to do so make a decision based on what is in their best interest at the time.

You have no idea what you are talking about.  I can count on one hand the number of Playboy models that went to hardcore. Try to name me some. Prove me wrong.
Heather Carolin does some hard girl/girl stuff but no boy/girl, Linn Thomas has done some hardcore, and Divini Rae has done some solo stuff.
Penthouse models on the other hand, ALWAYS go at least solo scenes if not girl/girl, and many end up hardcore.

And Maybe you haven't seen Penthouse models in real life, hun. They are not the most beautiful women in the world. Most are pornstars and strippers and a little worse for the wear. A handful of exceptions. Methinks you should understand the porn industry a little better before you try to lecture on it.

Take a look at Playboy's stock price -  other than the brand name/logo it's a dead company. Take a look at their websites - they are incredibly cheesey,  a model I know recently shot for Special Editions,  not even a makeup artist.

Penthouse was bought out of bankruptcy a few years ago by two very rich high tech guys.  They tried to position Penthouse to compete with Maxim and went VERY softcore for a time -  softer than Playboy.  It didn't work - they are back to explicit photography -  the photography is very good these days, they cleared the decks of old timers like Earl Miller and Suze Randall. The photography today in Penthouse is better than Playboy.  And if you pick up and actually read the magazine it's a very solid magazine again.

Why they are using pornstars as Penthouse Pets is beyond me.  The new owner of Penthouse found me a couple years back because I have a reputation of finding undiscovered girls next door.  They screwed me by trying to put a model of mine under exclusive contract when he had assured me beforehand he wouldn't.  They still contact me occassionally when they see a model of mine that appeals to them. I tell them I'm not a model scout or agent.

Girls who will drop their panties for Playboy and nobody else are morons -  but that's their choice. Playboy is cheap and really -  and when was the last Playmate to get a career started from Playboy?

The weird thing about Playboy is its almost completely lost its lustre with men -  the Internet has had a lot to do with that.  But it's huge with young women - unfortunately for them it's the name/logo that they like - they sure don't buy the magazine.

I watch porn, literally, all day every day. I work in the industry, I hire talent, I do marketing for porn. This is one thing I do know, back and forth.

Hardcore, industry definition, is boy/girl porn. Girl/girl is typically considered softcore, and solo work is solo work.

I work with them every day. There are a few very beautiful ones. But they do porn. That's their niche. It's not a bad thing... but it is what is is.
Anyway, prove your point and try to name me Playboy models that have done hardcore work. Or even hardcore SOLO work. And I can name you 10 penthouse pets that do it for every one Playboy Playmate you name.

I have no idea what you are getting at. There is a difference between the two but we are talking in terms of a magazine, not life. You are talking it way far out of context. This is not a "one is better than the other" discussion. This is the discussion of a models goals, because choosing to apply to Penthouse or Hustler will alter her modeling career. You are turning it into some personal thing that it's not. This is an industry discussion. Please keep it that way.
