A grid is a honeycomb patterned metal disc that goes in front of a light source.  It restricts the light spread into a more controllable spotlight.

try them and see what they do. Basically they focus the light to a small narrow beam .

like one of those flashlights you can zoom in and out... kinda like that, only you put a gird on to do the zooming.

To narrow the light's spread by various degrees. :-) Fabric grids supress spread also, but the metal grids used in parabolics have interchangable grids. From small (10 degree) to wider (40 degree) honeycombs that direct the light. Think of them as fine tuned barn doors.

You have good info above about what they are used for.   Now, I am going to tell you how important they are...... quite frankly, I find them indispensable.

Every need to hit a small area with a little bit of light?  Put in a 10-degree grid.  They are easy to install and easy to use.  Try them.

And here I thought you created the chart all by yourself.
:-)
Seriously, very good explanation.

Grids are cool.  I can't explain what they do better than has already been done.  But I can repeat, grids are cool.

I use them on nearly every shoot, and for many different things. Get some and try them. You'll probably find a dozen different ways to use them!
